Position Overview The Vitreo-Retina Surgeon will lead diagnostic evaluations, medical therapies, and advanced surgical interventions for posterior segment ocular diseases. Based in Bhubaneswar, this role involves managing an active Outpatient Department (OPD) and operating theatre (OT) schedule, treating complex surgical retina cases, and collaborating with cross-functional ophthalmic subspecialists.
Key Responsibilities
- Surgical Interventions: Perform independent micro-incision vitrectomy surgeries (MIVS – 23G, 25G, 27G) for conditions including rhegmatogenous/tractional retinal detachment, diabetic vitrectomy, vitreous hemorrhage, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, posterior segment trauma, and intraocular foreign body (IOFB) removal.
- Medical Retina Care: Conduct diagnostic evaluations and deliver medical management for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), and uveitic disorders.
- Diagnostic & Laser Procedures: Interpret high-resolution Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT/OCT-A), Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA), and B-scan ocular ultrasonography. Perform retinal laser photocoagulation (pan-retinal, focal, grid, and barrier) and administer intravitreal injections (anti-VEGF, steroid implants).
- Emergency Management: Manage emergency retinal cases, endophthalmitis, globe ruptures,
and acute posterior segment complications following anterior segment procedures.
- Clinical Governance & Mentorship: Oversee clinical documentation, maintain surgical audit standards, comply with NABH/JCI clinical protocols, and mentor fellows, residents, and optometrists.
Educational Background Required Qualifications & Experience
- MBBS from an NMC-recognized institution.
- MS / MD / DNB in Ophthalmology.
- Long-term Fellowship (FVR) in Vitreo-Retina from a recognized tertiary eye institute (e.g., LVPEI, Sankara Nethralaya, Aravind Eye Hospital, or equivalent).
Licensure: Valid registration with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or Odisha Council of Medical Registration (OCMR). Experience: Minimum 3 to 5 years of dedicated surgical experience post-fellowship, with a demonstrated track record of independent vitreoretinal surgeries.
Languages: Proficiency in English and Hindi; conversational fluency in Odia is highly preferred for patient interaction.
Preferred Technical Skills
- Proven track record using advanced vitrectomy platforms (e.g., Alcon Constellation, Bausch + Lomb Stellaris PC, or DORC EVA).
- Competency in secondary IOL fixations (SFIOL, Yamane technique, glued IOL).
- Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) and high-volume clinical workflows.
