Senior Design Engineer – Pipe Supports
Location: Mumbai, India
Practice: Industrial Engineering
Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Salary: Competitive, based on experience and qualifications
About the Client
Our client is an established international manufacturing company. It serves the oil & gas, petrochemical, power, district energy and wider industrial sectors. As it continues to grow, it is strengthening its global engineering function with a specialist in piping support design, based in Mumbai.
The Role
You will design, analyse, detail and develop standard and engineered piping support systems for industrial piping applications. Your support solutions will need to be safe, technically compliant, manufacturable and cost-effective. They will be based on piping layouts, stress-analysis loads and movements, project specifications, operating conditions and international engineering standards.
The role combines project-specific support engineering with the development and continuous improvement of the company's piping support product range. You will report into the global engineering leadership and work alongside manufacturing, quality, procurement and project teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Design standard and special piping supports, including pipe shoes, saddles, cradles, clamps, guides, line stops, anchors, sliding supports, structural support assemblies, insulated supports and spring supports.
- Review piping isometrics, GA drawings, support schedules, stress-analysis loads, displacements, design temperatures, insulation requirements and project specifications.
- Develop support concepts that account for vertical, longitudinal, lateral, uplift, friction, thermal, sustained, occasional and test loads.
- Carry out engineering calculations, including strength and stability checks, plate bending, structural member sizing, weld and bolt calculations, bearing and contact stresses, base plate and stiffener design, sliding and overturning checks, deflection and buckling checks, and load-capacity calculations.
- Perform or coordinate finite element analysis for complex or non-standard support configurations.
- Prepare and review 2D drawings, 3D models, fabrication and assembly drawings, Bills of Materials and technical documentation.
- Ensure designs comply with project specifications and standards such as MSS SP-58, ASME B31.1/B31.3, ASTM, AWS and AISC.
- Select suitable materials, purchased components, coatings, sliding materials, load-bearing insulation materials and fabrication methods.
- Design for manufacturability, taking account of welding, cutting, forming, machining, tolerances, coating, galvanising, assembly, handling and inspection.
- Coordinate with project engineering, stress engineering, manufacturing, procurement, quality, estimation and customers.
- Respond to technical queries, customer comments, manufacturing issues, deviations and engineering change requests.
- Support prototype development, qualification testing, load testing and validation of new or modified products.
- Develop and improve standard designs, calculation methods, design templates and engineering practices.
- At senior level, review other engineers' calculations and drawings, mentor junior team members, and take technical ownership of complex or special support designs.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Solid fundamentals in engineering mechanics, strength of materials, machine design and structural behaviour.
- Knowledge of piping support design and fabrication practices.
- Ability to interpret piping drawings and piping stress-analysis results.
- Working knowledge of engineering materials, welding, bolted joints, fabrication and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with at least one 3D CAD system,
such as Autodesk Inventor or Solid Works.
- Experience with ANSYS or other FEA software.
- Familiarity with CAESAR II or AutoPIPE outputs is desirable. Direct pipe stress analysis experience is not required.
Experience
Design Engineer: Typically 3–7 years of relevant mechanical design experience. Experience in piping supports, industrial piping, fabricated steel products, mechanical equipment or similar engineered products is preferred.
Senior Design Engineer: Typically 7–12 years of relevant experience. You will have a proven ability to independently design, calculate, review and release complex piping support assemblies.
Experience with any of the following is strongly preferred:
- A specialist pipe-support manufacturer or an EPC organisation.
- Oil & gas, LNG, petrochemical, power, district energy or other industrial piping sectors.
Experience with any of the following is an advantage:
- Cryogenic, high-temperature or spring supports.
- Insulated supports and composite or load-bearing insulation materials.
- New product development.
What You Bring
- Sound engineering judgement and analytical problem-solving.
- High attention to technical detail.
- Ownership of your engineering assignments from start to finish.
- A practical, manufacturing-oriented approach to design.
- Clear technical communication, written and verbal, including with customers.
- The ability to work effectively across engineering, manufacturing, quality, procurement and project teams.
- An organised approach to priorities, deadlines, revisions and documentation.
- A drive to improve existing designs and contribute to product development and engineering standardisation.
Additional Information
- This is an individual contributor role with no direct line management. It involves technical guidance and coordination across functions.
- Occasional travel to manufacturing plants, suppliers, testing facilities or project sites may be required.
- Work takes place in both office and manufacturing environments. PPE must be worn in designated areas.
