The Duty Medical Officer (DMO) is responsible for providing high-quality, immediate, and continuous medical care to patients in the Emergency Department (ER), Intensive Care Units (ICU), Outpatient Departments (OPD), and Inpatient Wards. As the primary on-site clinician during assigned shifts, the Duty Doctor handles initial triage, stabilizes critical patients, and coordinates directly with attending consultants to ensure seamless clinical operations
Key Responsibilities & Duties
1. Clinical Care & Emergency Management
- Emergency Triage: Conduct immediate clinical evaluations, take medical histories, and perform physical examinations for patients arriving at the ER.
- Patient Stabilization: Manage acute medical emergencies and administer lifesaving care (e.g., CPR, intubation, IV access, wound care).
- Routine Rounds: Monitor inpatient (IPD) progress in general wards and critical care areas, adjusting treatment plans as authorized.
- Medication & Interventions: Prescribe diagnostic tests, medications, and clinical interventions according to hospital protocols.
2. Coordination & Supervision
- Consultant Collaboration: Assist senior specialists during surgeries or specialized clinical procedures; report changes in critical patient status immediately.
- Team Leadership: Guide and supervise nursing and paramedical staff during shifts to maintain standard patient safety protocols.
- Shift Handover: Attend and manage shift-based duty rosters,
providing a exact, documented clinical summary to the incoming medical team.
3. Documentation & Medical Compliance
- Record Keeping: Maintain meticulous electronic or physical medical records, including case sheets, vital charts, and comprehensive discharge summaries.
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to national healthcare guidelines (such as NABH standards in India) and corporate hospital policies.
- Legal Responsibility: Identify and properly document Medico-Legal Cases (MLCs) and notify appropriate administrative authorities.
4. Communication & Patient Relations
- Explain medical diagnoses, expected treatment outcomes, and potential risks empathetically to patients and their attendants.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Education: MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Mandatory valid registration with the relevant State Medical Council (e.g., TNMC) or National Medical Commission (NMC).
- Experience: 3 to 5+ years of clinical experience. Freshers with a completed internship are welcome, though prior ICU or ER exposure is highly preferred.
- Core Skills:
- Prompt clinical judgment and critical problem-solving capabilities.
- Proficiency in basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiovascular life support
- Solid cooperative and cross-departmental communication skills.
