What You’ll Be Doing (position summary):

- As a hands-on Senior Data Engineer, you will build ETL, analytics, and data consumption capabilities aligned to a multi-year product roadmap. Working with Product, Architecture, Data, and business stakeholders, you will translate business goals into scalable Databricks solutions using PySpark and modern engineering practices.
- You will serve as a senior technical contributor, partnering with Data Engineers, testers, and Data Analysts to solve complex challenges in data modeling, transformation, and consumption. You will design, develop, test, and implement secure cloud data solutions using Databricks, PySpark, Delta Lake, ETL, data quality, and lineage.
- You will drive engineering excellence through production-quality PySpark, code reviews, testing, reusable frameworks, CI/CD, and Databricks performance tuning. You will troubleshoot complex pipelines, improve reliability and cost efficiency, mentor peers,



remove technical bottlenecks, and support releases.
- You will estimate technical work, identify platform optimizations, define engineering metrics, and contribute to Agile delivery through refinement, story sizing, and technical planning. You will build POCs to validate Databricks patterns and production readiness.
- Success in this role requires clear communication and technical presentation skills, with the ability to explain trade-offs, facilitate design discussions, and influence decisions through architecture and governance forums.
- This role is one of the early hires for US Technology, Data & AI at CIBC India, helping establish cross-site alignment and a strong engineering culture supporting enterprise and TDAI priorities. Work arrangements, including on-site and remote work, will be discussed during the interview process.

How You’ll Succeed (responsibilities):

- Technical Delivery: Translate business needs into reliable Databricks data products; design and build PySpark pipelines; estimate work; manage dependencies; define quality metrics; and use GitHub Copilot responsibly within software engineering practices.
- Data Engineering and Architecture: Design secure, scalable Databricks solutions using PySpark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, and Azure. Improve performance through partitioning, file optimization, testing, CI/CD, observability, and technical-debt reduction.
- Risk and Compliance: Embed privacy, security, auditability, data quality, and least-privilege access in solutions; follow governance standards; and support Compliance and Audit evidence needs.
- Collaboration and Technical Mentoring: Partner across product, architecture, operations, and U.S.-based teams; communicate designs and trade-offs clearly; mentor engineers through pairing and reviews; and share reusable Databricks and PySpark patterns.

CROSS-FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

- Technology management teams to ensure shared accountability for Technology strategy and objectives
- Enterprise Technology colleagues to ensure strategic alignment across projects
- Internal business partners including executive heads of CIBC lines of business, leadership teams, partner teams, and centers of excellence
- External technology vendors and partners providing critical solutions and services

Experience: 8+ years of experience

Must Have Skills:

- 8+ years of data engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, ideally in financial services or technology
- 5+ years building production data applications with deep expertise in data modeling, distributed processing, and cloud data platforms
- Advanced proficiency in PySpark and Databricks, including Spark execution, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, workflows, and performance tuning
- Deep experience designing batch and streaming ingestion, transformation pipelines, data quality controls, and curated data models on Azure
- Strong Python, SQL, ETL, Azure SQL, and REST API skills, with working knowledge of Scala
- Ability to diagnose Spark jobs using execution plans and metrics, and optimize joins, partitions, caching, file sizes, clusters, and cost
- Robust automated testing and DevOps practices across Git, CI/CD, environment management, secrets, security, and release controls
- Experience implementing observability, lineage, schema evolution, failure recovery, and service-level monitoring for critical pipelines
- Proven ability to build POCs, establish reusable engineering patterns, and scale solutions to secure production workloads
- Ability to document designs, explain technical trade-offs, and present clear recommendations to engineering and business partners
- Solid collaboration skills and experience mentoring engineers through pairing, code reviews, and knowledge sharing
- Ability to own technical delivery, identify risks early, troubleshoot complex issues, and work effectively through ambiguity
- Knowledge of data governance, privacy, access controls, and regulated-environment engineering practices.

Good to Have:

- Databricks Certified Data Engineer Skilled or Microsoft Azure data engineering certification is an asset
