We are looking for a hands-on Power BI Subject Matter Expert who knows Power BI inside out, with solid Microsoft Fabric experience and a working background in Tableau. You will be the go-to technical authority on report development, data modeling, DAX, performance, and governance, while still building solutions yourself. You will solve the hardest Power BI problems across enterprise engagements, guide developers on best practices, and use your Tableau background to support clients migrating from Tableau to Power BI and Fabric.
Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
- Build complex, enterprise-scale semantic models using star-schema design and advanced DAX (calculation groups, field parameters, time intelligence, dynamic formatting).
- Develop high-quality reports with strong UX, drill-through, bookmarks, tooltips, and custom visuals where needed.
- Write Power Query (M) and SQL for data preparation and transformation.
- Choose the right storage mode (Import, DirectQuery, Composite, Direct Lake) based on scale, latency, and cost.
- Build and review Tableau dashboards and data sources, and translate Tableau constructs (LOD expressions, table calculations, parameters, actions) into DAX and Power BI equivalents.
Performance & Optimization
- Diagnose and tune slow models and reports using DAX Studio, Tabular Editor, VertiPaq Analyzer, and Performance Analyzer.
- Optimize refresh strategies, including incremental refresh, partitioning, and aggregations.
Governance, Security & Administration
- Implement RLS/OLS, workspace strategy, and access controls.
- Manage Power BI Service: gateways, scheduled refresh, apps, sensitivity labels, endorsement, and lineage.
- Set up deployment pipelines and version control for Power BI artifacts (PBIP, TMDL).
Leadership & Enablement
- Act as the escalation point for complex Power BI and Fabric issues across projects.
- Conduct model and report reviews,
and contribute to development standards and best practices.
- Mentor developers and advise clients on Power BI adoption and roadmap, including Copilot in Power BI.
- Support clients adopting Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouse, Direct Lake, OneLake), including Tableau-to-Power BI transitions.
- Communicate clearly with business and technical stakeholders, explaining trade-offs between Power BI, Fabric, and Tableau.
Required Skills
- Strong, hands-on Power BI report and dashboard development experience in enterprise BI/analytics, at SME level (5+ years).
- Expert DAX, data modeling (star schema), and Power Query (M).
- Strong SQL.
- Solid understanding of storage modes, incremental refresh, and performance tuning.
- Hands-on with Tabular Editor, DAX Studio, and XMLA endpoints.
- Experience with RLS/OLS, deployment pipelines, and Power BI Service administration.
- Power BI Embedded and paginated reports.
- Hands-on Microsoft Fabric experience: Lakehouse, Warehouse, Data Pipelines, Dataflows Gen2, Notebooks, and Direct Lake.
- Fabric capacity management and Git integration for Fabric workspaces.
- A few years (2+) of hands-on Tableau development experience (dashboards, calculations, LOD expressions, data sources).
- Excellent communication and client-facing skills.
Valuable to Have
- Python / PySpark or Semantic Link (SemPy).
- Automation using APIs: Power BI REST APIs, Fabric REST APIs, or PowerShell; Tableau REST API.
- Power BI certification: PL-300.
- Fabric certifications: DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer), DP-700.
- Reports migration experience from Tableau, Qlik, SSRS, or other BI tools to Power BI, including inventory, mapping, and validation.
- Any of these Domains: CPG, Market Intelligence Finance, Healthcare, Pharma, Banking or Retail domain
- Azure ecosystem: Data Factory, Synapse, Databricks, Entra ID.
Education Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
