Position Summary The Manager, Database Administration (DBA) leads the team responsible for the availability, performance, security, and integrity of critical production and non-production databases across the organization. The role is vital to maintaining the stability of core clinical, financial, and operational systems.
The ideal candidate brings deep database expertise, strong operational management capabilities, and experience managing sensitive healthcare data in a highly regulated setting. The role combines people leadership, production operations, security and compliance, disaster recovery, performance management, and future-state database architecture.
Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of Database Administrators (DBAs), promoting best practices in database maintenance, security, and performance tuning.
- Oversee team workload, incident response, operational SLAs, performance reviews, professional development, and 24/7 on-call readiness.
- Define and maintain database backup, recovery, patching, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
- Oversee proactive monitoring, query optimization, indexing, capacity planning, tuning, and optimization across database platforms.
- Manage database sprawl, licensing compliance, and cost efficiency across on-premise and cloud environments.
- Standardize and automate routine database administration tasks and maintenance activities.
- Ensure database environments and data-access protocols comply with HIPAA requirements and organizational security policies.
- Oversee database security controls including encryption, access controls, auditing,
and role-based security; partner with Information Security on vulnerability remediation.
- Contribute to future-state database architecture and cloud-native database migrations, including Azure SQL DB, AWS RDS, and Snowflake.
- Provide guidance to development and application teams on data modeling, efficient query design, and appropriate use of database features.
- Manage vendor relationships and technology roadmaps across platforms such as Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, DB2 mainframes, and PostgreSQL.
Education &
- Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field
- B.Tech / B.E / equivalent graduation may be considered.
- Minimum 8 years of progressive experience as a Database Administrator or Database Engineer.
- Minimum 4 years of experience managing a DBA team or leading the database function.
- Proven experience managing operational and analytical databases within the US Healthcare domain, including knowledge of EHR/EMR database structures.
Must Have Skills
- Expert-level administration, maintenance, and performance tuning experience in at least one major database platform, such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle.
- Strong database high availability and disaster recovery experience, including Always On, replication, and failover clustering.
- Hands-on experience with cloud database services across Azure, AWS, or GCP, including IaaS and PaaS/DBaaS offerings.
- Strong understanding of physical and logical database design, normalization, backup/recovery, capacity planning, and security hardening.
- Proven DBA team leadership covering workload management, SLAs, incident response, performance management, and 24/7 operational readiness.
- Experience implementing database security, access controls, encryption, auditing, and compliance controls in regulated environments.
- Strong stakeholder communication, problem-solving, and ability to work with application, infrastructure, security, and business teams.
Nice To Have Skills
- Proficiency in automation scripting such as PowerShell or Python.
- Experience managing NoSQL databases such as MongoDB or Cassandra.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
- Experience with modern data integration and ETL/ELT tools such as Informatica, Talend, Azure Data Factory, or SSIS.
- Understanding of data warehousing, Kimball/Inmon data modeling, and data governance principles.
- Experience with cloud-native database platforms such as Azure SQL DB, AWS RDS, or Snowflake.
- Relevant database certifications such as Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle certifications.
