Under general supervision, incumbents perform supervisory and technical functions involving responsibility for the safe and productive operation and maintenance of a staffed wastewater pumping plant, a number of unstaffed plants or a combination of both. Some plants have facilities for screening and grit removal. General direction is received from the appointing authority but wide leeway is allowed for planning work methods and dealing with emergency conditions.

An incumbent may be responsible for maintaining pump stations, leachate and methane collection systems at the Croton Landfill. Supervision is exercised over maintenance and labor employees. Does related work as required.
