Business Analyst – Insurance

About the Role

We are looking for a Business Analyst – Insurance with 3–6 years of experience in Business Analysis, Data Analytics, or Analytics Consulting.

The role involves working closely with business, data, and engineering teams to translate insurance business requirements into well-defined KPIs, data models, and actionable analytics solutions.

The ideal candidate should have strong stakeholder management and SQL skills, an understanding of dimensional modelling, and the ability to translate complex business requirements into clear technical requirements. Prior insurance/BFSI exposure is preferred, along with a strong willingness to learn the insurance domain.

Key Responsibilities

- Insurance Domain & Business Understanding

- Develop a strong understanding of the insurance value chain, including:
- Product & Underwriting
- Policy Administration
- Distribution
- Claims
- Reinsurance
- Finance
- Actuarial Reporting
- Understand and accurately use key insurance terminology such as Premium, Exposure, Loss Ratio, Combined Ratio, Persistency, Lapse, Claim Severity, and Claim Frequency.
- Work closely with domain experts to build insurance knowledge and document learnings for wider team use.

2. Stakeholder Management & Requirements Gathering
- Conduct discovery sessions and workshops with business heads and teams across underwriting, claims, actuarial, finance, and distribution.
- Gather, clarify, and challenge business requirements and translate them into clear and prioritized requirements.
- Manage stakeholder communication around progress, risks, dependencies, scope, and timelines.
- Work effectively with both business and technical stakeholders.

3. Business KPIs & Metrics
- Define KPIs with transparent business meaning, calculation logic, grain, filters, ownership, and source systems.
- Establish and maintain a consistent KPI dictionary across stakeholders.




- Reconcile analytical outputs with finance and actuarial reports and investigate data variances.
- Ensure KPI definitions and business rules are clearly documented and understood.

4. Data Modelling & Star Schemas
- Translate business processes such as premium, claims, policies, and renewals into dimensional data models.
- Define fact tables, dimensions, grain, hierarchies, and slowly changing dimensions.
- Prepare source-to-target mappings and detailed data definitions.
- Review data models with business, data engineering, and domain teams before implementation.
- Validate delivered data against the defined data model and KPI logic.

5. Technical Coordination & Delivery
- Break business requirements into well-defined technical tasks with clear acceptance criteria.
- Coordinate with Data Engineering, BI/Reporting, Data Quality, and Platform teams.
- Track delivery, manage dependencies, and help resolve blockers.
- Conduct UAT with business users and support final sign-off.
- Maintain clear documentation including requirement documents, data dictionaries, mapping sheets, and release notes.

Required Skills & Experience
- 3–6 years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or Analytics Consultant on data, BI, or reporting projects.
- Solid understanding of dimensional modelling, including facts, dimensions, grain, and star schemas.
- Ability to explain data models and analytical concepts to business stakeholders.
- Strong SQL skills for data profiling, validation, and KPI/data logic checks.




- Proven experience in stakeholder management, requirement gathering, and conducting workshops with senior business users.
- Experience defining, documenting, and managing business metrics/KPIs.
- Ability to create clear requirement documents, user stories, and acceptance criteria and effectively hand requirements over to engineering teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical, structured, and detail-oriented approach.
- Willingness to quickly learn the insurance domain and work closely with domain experts.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Commerce, Economics, or a related field.

Good to Have
- Prior experience in Insurance (General, Life, or Health), Broking, Reinsurance, or related BFSI domains.
- Familiarity with insurance data such as policy, premium, claims, and agent/distribution data.
- Knowledge of insurance metrics such as Loss Ratio and Persistency.
- Hands-on experience with Power BI, Tableau, or similar BI tools.
- Exposure to cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Databricks, Azure Synapse, or BigQuery.
- Experience with data modelling tools, source-to-target mapping, and data quality processes.
- Insurance certifications such as IC-38/CII or business/analytics certifications such as CBAP.
- Experience working in Agile environments with tools such as Jira or Azure DevOps.
