Backend Developer (Supabase / Postgres), Mobile App | Contract, Long-Term Potential | Remote

About the client

Academy is hiring for a consumer startup building a mobile app that helps adults find dance classes near them. Think Yelp for adult dance classes. The app works and is getting ready to launch. Now the team needs an experienced backend developer to make sure it's secure and performs well as it grows.

The role

You'll review, harden and scale the app's Supabase backend, and own new backend features. This starts as project-based work, ASAP, with real potential for a long-term role. If you can also help with the website and UI/UX implementation, that's a big plus.

What you'll do

- Audit and improve the Postgres/Supabase schema, migrations and Row-Level Security policies
- Optimize geographic "classes near me" search as listings grow from dozens to thousands
- Build and maintain Edge Functions for webhooks, scheduled jobs and business logic
- Strengthen third-party integrations: SMS login, subscriptions, analytics and geocoding
- Model recurring class schedules across time zones and seasonal sessions
- Support admin workflows: listing claims, corrections,



moderation and account deletion
- Advise on scalability, data privacy and best practices ahead of launch

What we're looking for

- Strong Postgres skills: indexing, constraints, window functions, JSON, query optimization
- PostGIS experience (radius search with ST_DWithin/ST_Distance, GIST indexes)
- Production experience with Supabase: Auth, RLS, Edge Functions (TypeScript/Deno), Realtime, Storage and triggers
- Protected migration practices, including rollback strategies
- Experience integrating APIs and webhooks (for example Twilio, RevenueCat, PostHog, Mapbox/Google Places/OpenStreetMap)
- Familiarity with pagination, cursor-based queries and performance tuning at scale
- An understanding of data privacy, soft deletes and data retention

Nice to have

- Web development and UI/UX implementation experience
- Mobile app backend experience (iOS/Android)
- Experience with marketplace or directory-style apps
- Comfortable working with AI-assisted codebases
- Interest in dance, fitness or the arts
