Legal Manager – Litigation (Civil & Criminal)
Ahmedabad | Full time
About the role
A listed company in Ahmedabad is hiring a Legal Manager to own the civil and criminal litigation of the company and its group entities end to end. You will report to the Head – Secretarial and Legal.
This is a hands-on litigation seat, not a contracts or compliance role. You will verify pleadings, brief and coordinate external counsel, attend court where required, protect limitation, and keep management informed of risk and exposure across the group's case portfolio. Part of the portfolio involves media-related matters, including the defence of defamation proceedings.
Key responsibilities
Litigation management
- Maintain a complete litigation register across the company and group entities — court, case number, parties, stage, next date, counsel, exposure and status.
- Monitor limitation for suits, appeals, revisions and replies so that no matter is lost by default.
- Attend courts where required and coordinate the appearance of external counsel in all other matters.
- Arrange personal appearance of company officers where courts require it, along with sureties, bonds and exemption applications.
Drafting and review
- Review plaints, written statements, replies, rejoinders, interim applications, affidavits, appeals, revisions and writ petitions.
- Review criminal complaints, bail and anticipatory bail applications, discharge applications and quashing petitions.
- Review notices and complaints under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, and draft replies to legal notices.
Trial support
- Collect,
organise and preserve documentary and electronic evidence.
- Prepare witnesses and company officers for examination and cross-examination.
- Prepare briefs, chronologies and lists of dates.
Counsel, reporting and risk
- Brief external advocates and verify fee bills.
- Submit a monthly litigation MIS to the Head – Secretarial and Legal.
- Escalate promptly any litigation, order or development that may require disclosure to the stock exchanges.
- Support recovery actions, property, tenancy, employment and consumer matters across group entities, and liaise with police authorities where the company is involved.
What we are looking for
Essential
- LL.B. or B.A. LL.B. from a recognised university.
- 8+ years of hands-on civil and criminal litigation experience — as a practising advocate, in a law firm, or in a company's legal department.
- Experience appearing in or managing matters before civil courts, criminal courts (Judicial Magistrate and Sessions), commercial courts and the High Court of Gujarat.
- A track record of taking matters through trial: evidence, examination and cross-examination of witnesses, and final arguments.
- Ability to read and draft in Gujarati. Court records, FIRs and the published material in question are largely in Gujarati.
This is not negotiable.
- Working knowledge of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023, alongside the IPC, CrPC and Evidence Act as they continue to apply to pending matters; and on the civil side, CPC, Specific Relief Act, Limitation Act, Transfer of Property Act, Contract Act, Commercial Courts Act 2015 and the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996.
- Willingness to travel to courts across Gujarat.
Advantageous
- LL.M.
- Experience in defamation matters — criminal complaints under Section 356 BNS (or Sections 499 and 500 IPC for older matters), civil defamation suits, opposing interim injunctions against publications, or replies to defamation notices.
- Experience managing a case portfolio for a company and reporting to management.
- Familiarity with litigation management software.
What you will be measured on
- Nil missed dates, ex parte orders or limitation lapses.
- Litigation register updated within 24 hours of every hearing.
- Replies and verified drafts finalised before the due date.
- Monthly MIS submitted on time.
To apply: Apply through Indeed with an updated CV. Shortlisted candidates will be asked about their High Court of Gujarat experience, matters taken through trial, and comfort drafting in Gujarati.
