Key Responsibilities
- Pre-Anaesthetic Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive pre-anaesthetic evaluation of patients undergoing cardiac and cardiothoracic procedures.
- Review medical history, cardiovascular status, investigations, echocardiography, ECG, medications, allergies, and relevant laboratory findings.
- Assess airway, haemodynamic status, comorbidities, and perioperative risk.
- Formulate an appropriate anaesthetic plan in consultation with the cardiac anaesthesia consultant.
- Cardiac Anaesthesia Management
- Provide anaesthetic care for procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting, valve surgery, congenital cardiac surgery, major aortic procedures, and other cardiothoracic interventions, according to training and competency.
- Assist with induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia.
- Manage haemodynamic and physiological changes associated with cardiac surgery.
- Intraoperative Monitoring
- Monitor ECG, invasive and non-invasive blood pressure, oxygenation, ventilation, temperature, urine output, and other relevant physiological parameters.
- Assist with invasive haemodynamic monitoring, including arterial and central venous pressure monitoring.
- Assist with advanced monitoring such as pulmonary artery catheterization and transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE), where trained and authorized.
- Cardiopulmonary Bypass
- Participate in the perioperative management of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Coordinate closely with the perfusionist and surgical team before, during, and after bypass.
- Assist with management of anticoagulation, haemodynamic changes, temperature management, blood conservation, and separation from cardiopulmonary bypass.
- Transoesophageal Echocardiography
- Assist with perioperative TEE assessment where appropriately trained and credentialed.
- Support assessment of ventricular function, valvular pathology, volume status, and other relevant cardiac findings.
- Communicate significant findings promptly to the cardiac surgical and anaesthesia teams.
- Airway and Ventilatory Management
- Perform and assist with advanced airway management appropriate to the patient's condition.
- Provide appropriate mechanical ventilation during anaesthesia and perioperative care.
- Manage difficult-airway situations and assist with emergency airway procedures.
- Haemodynamic and Critical Care Management
- Manage perioperative hypotension, hypertension, arrhythmias, myocardial dysfunction, and other cardiovascular complications.
- Assist with the use of vasoactive and inotropic medications as clinically indicated.
- Participate in the stabilization and management of critically ill cardiac patients.
- Postoperative Cardiac Intensive Care
- Participate in the immediate postoperative management of patients in the cardiac ICU.
- Assist with mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, fluid and electrolyte management, analgesia, sedation, and early postoperative stabilization.
- Recognize and promptly escalate postoperative complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, low cardiac output, respiratory failure, and other critical events.
- Emergency and Resuscitation Services
- Respond to cardiac and perioperative emergencies, including cardiac arrest, severe haemodynamic instability, malignant arrhythmias, acute airway emergencies, and major bleeding.
- Participate in advanced cardiac life support and resuscitation.
- Assist with emergency cardiac procedures and stabilization when required.
- Blood and Transfusion Management
- Assist in perioperative blood-conservation strategies.
- Assess and manage blood loss and transfusion requirements in coordination with the surgical and critical-care teams.
- Follow institutional protocols for blood component therapy and transfusion safety.
- Pain Management
- Participate in postoperative and acute pain management for cardiac and cardiothoracic surgical patients.
- Assist with appropriate multimodal analgesia and regional techniques where indicated and within competency.
- On-Call Responsibilities
- Provide cardiac anaesthesia and emergency critical-care services during assigned on-call duties.
- Attend urgent and emergency cardiac surgical cases and provide timely assessment and management.
- Participate in night, weekend, and public-holiday duties according to the departmental roster.
- Clinical Documentation
- Maintain accurate pre-anaesthetic assessments, anaesthetic charts, invasive monitoring records, drug administration records, postoperative notes, and procedure documentation.
- Document complications and significant perioperative events appropriately.
- Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Work closely with cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, intensivists, perfusionists, nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in preoperative planning, intraoperative team discussions, postoperative handovers, and multidisciplinary case reviews.
- Patient Safety and Infection Control
- Adhere to institutional policies, infection-control practices, medication-safety protocols, transfusion policies, and cardiac anaesthesia guidelines.
- Ensure appropriate checking and preparation of anaesthesia machines, airway equipment, monitors, emergency drugs, blood products, and resuscitation equipment.
- Teaching and Training
- Assist in teaching medical students, interns, junior residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in academic meetings, case discussions, seminars, journal clubs, and departmental teaching programmes.
- Clinical Governance and Career development
- Participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, quality-improvement initiatives, and departmental reviews.
- Contribute to research and academic activities where applicable.
- Maintain continuing professional development and competency in cardiac anaesthesia and critical care.
Pay: ₹100,000.00 - ₹150,000.00 per month
