About us

Charcounting is a growing tax and accounting firm serving businesses across North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. We specialize in construction, dental, physician groups, real estate, transportation, nonprofits, and childcare. We built our own AI financial platform that our team and clients use daily for bookkeeping, document processing, month-end close, and client communication. We're hiring an engineer to take full ownership of software and lead its next development phase.

What you'll do

First 90 days: take over the platform

- Take over an existing production codebase: the Next.js frontend, the Python/FastAPI backend (about 270 API endpoints) and the Supabase/Postgres database.
- Take control of all infrastructure and accounts: GitHub, Vercel, Render, Cloudflare, Supabase, Sentry, OpenAI, AWS, Plaid and Resend.
- Document the system: how it's built, how to set it up locally, how deployments work, where setting variables and secrets live, scheduled jobs and runbooks for common incidents.
- Audit and harden security: rotate credentials, review access controls, restrict the public API documentation in production and confirm backups and recovery work.
- Find the biggest gaps in tests, monitoring and CI/CD, and propose a plan to fix them.

Ongoing: own and grow

- Build new features, fix bugs and keep the platform fast and reliable for staff and clients.
- Develop the Python/FastAPI backend: accounting, ledger, transactions, reconciliation, client portal, chat and knowledge base.
- Develop the Next.js (App Router) / React / TypeScript frontend and its installable app (PWA).
- Improve our AI features built on OpenAI GPT models, including the in-app AI assistant,



document processing and automated client questions.
- Maintain the document pipeline, which reads bank statements with AWS Textract (OCR).
- Manage integrations with Plaid (bank and card connections), QuickBooks Online, Resend (email) and inbound email workflows.
- Manage the Supabase/Postgres database: schema changes, migrations, performance and backups.
- Run deployments and infrastructure on Vercel (frontend), Render (backend) and Cloudflare.
- Monitor errors and performance with Sentry, and respond to production issues.
- Work directly with the firm's owner and accounting team to turn real accounting workflows into product features.

What we're looking for

- 3+ years building and shipping production web applications.
- A proven ability to take over and stabilize an existing codebase you didn't write.
- Strong Python skills; FastAPI experience strongly preferred.
- Strong TypeScript/React skills; Next.js experience strongly preferred.
- Solid PostgreSQL skills; Supabase experience is a plus.
- Hands-on experience building with LLM APIs (OpenAI or similar), including prompt design, structured outputs and handling cost and accuracy trade-offs.
- Experience with third-party APIs and webhooks; Plaid or other fintech integrations are a big plus.
- Comfort running cloud deployments on Vercel, Render or similar, and debugging production issues.




- Security-minded, especially around financial and personal data.
- Strong documentation habits and clear communication with non-technical stakeholders.
- Self-directed. You'll be the sole engineer, so you need to prioritize and ship without heavy oversight.

Nice to have

- Accounting, bookkeeping or fintech background (double-entry, chart of accounts, bank reconciliation).
- Experience with AWS Textract or other OCR and document extraction tools.
- QuickBooks Online API experience.
- Experience as a solo or founding engineer owning a product end to end.
