Job Purpose and Impact
- The Senior Professional, Financial Accounting & Controllership role provides accounting and financial oversight for commodity risk management activities, including derivative accounting, CAK MTM, inventory valuation, and financial reporting. With minimal supervision, this role partners with Commercial, Risk Management, Treasury, FP&A;, and Operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and compliance with accounting policies. The role also drives process improvements, reporting standardization, and automation initiatives to support business growth and effective risk management.
Key Accountabilities
1. ACCOUNTING & RISK ACCOUNTING
- Independently manage and execute Commodity Accounting Kernel (CAK) MTM, Derivative Accounting, and Inventory Valuation activities for assigned business units.
- Ensure accurate recording and reporting of commodity, futures, options, swaps, and other derivative transactions in compliance with US GAAP and company accounting policies.
- Perform daily and month-end validation of mark-to-market positions, unrealized gains/losses, and inventory valuation adjustments.
- Own and perform COPA, Subledger-to-GL, and Risk-to-Financial reconciliation processes, ensuring timely identification and resolution of variances.
- Analyze balance sheet and P&L; impacts arising from commodity market movements and accounting treatments.
2. ACCOUNTING SERVICES SUPPORT
- Execute month-end close activities related to commodity inventories, derivative positions, hedge settlements, accruals, and risk-related accounting entries.
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, open item analysis, and supporting schedules for financial reporting.
- Partner with business, commercial, risk management, and operations teams to investigate and resolve accounting and valuation issues.
- Support audit requests and provide documentation for internal and external audits.
3. FINANCIAL ANALYSIS & REPORTING
- Prepare and deliver monthly risk accounting reports, MTM analysis, inventory valuation reports, and management commentary.
- Analyze commodity exposure impacts on financial statements and explain material period-over-period variances.
- Communicate key accounting and financial risks to stakeholders and management teams.
4. INTERNAL CONTROLS & COMPLIANCE
- Ensure compliance with company accounting policies, controls, and regulatory requirements related to commodity and derivative accounting.
- Execute and maintain effective controls over valuation, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting processes.
- Support control testing, remediation activities, and continuous monitoring initiatives.
- Identify accounting and operational risks and recommend mitigation strategies.
5. FINANCIAL RISK MANAGEMENT & REPORTING
- Partner with Commercial, Risk Management, and FP&A; teams to understand commodity exposures and accounting implications.
- Review hedge relationships, derivative valuations, and risk reporting outputs to ensure accurate financial reporting.
- Support the accounting treatment of commodity contracts, inventory positions, intercompany transactions.
- Provide accounting guidance and support for new business activities, contracts, and risk management strategies.
6. PROCESS IMPROVEMENT & DIGITALIZATION
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on simplifying and automating risk accounting, valuation, and reconciliation processes.
- Utilize SAP, Power BI, and other reporting tools to enhance reporting accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Drive standardization of risk accounting processes across business units and regions.
- Develop and maintain SOPs, process documentation, and training materials to ensure sustainability and knowledge transfer.
Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications (Recommended)
- Strong understanding of Commodity Risk Management, Derivative Accounting, Inventory Valuation, and Mark-to-Market Accounting.
- Experience with SAP, COPA, CAK, Power BI, and Excel-based financial analysis.
- Knowledge of hedging instruments, futures, options, swaps, basis risk, and commodity markets.
- Strong analytical, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
- Skilled qualifications such as CA, CPA, CMA, CFA, or equivalent preferred.
Qualifications
- Minimum requirement of 6-8 years of relevant work experience. Typically reflects 5 years or more of relevant experience.
Shift Timings
Support North America – Non month close 2:00pm to 11:00pm and month close 6:00pm to 3:00am with ability to extend based on business needs.
