1. Job Purpose

To supervise and control all melting operations to achieve the required metal quality, chemistry, temperature, production quantity, productivity and safety standards while ensuring efficient utilization of furnaces, manpower and raw materials.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Melting Operations

- Supervise daily melting operations as per production plan.
- Operate and monitor induction/electric melting furnaces as applicable.
- Ensure correct charging sequence and proper charge-mix preparation.
- Monitor furnace temperature, melting time and power consumption.
- Ensure proper tapping, pouring and transfer of molten metal.
- Coordinate with the Quality and Moulding departments for metal requirements.
- Maintain continuous production as per planned schedules.

B. Charge Material & Alloy Control

- Verify raw materials such as pig iron, steel scrap, returns, borings and other charge materials.
- Ensure correct charge calculation as per grade requirements.
- Control alloy and inoculant additions according to approved specifications.
- Prevent mixing of different grades and contaminated materials.
- Maintain proper identification and traceability of charge materials.

C. Chemical Composition & Quality

- Coordinate with the laboratory for spectrometer/chemical analysis.
- Check and control chemical composition before tapping.
- Ensure metal temperature is within the specified range.
- Take corrective action when chemistry or temperature is outside specification.
- Maintain records of heat number, grade, chemistry and tapping details.
- Minimize defects caused by incorrect chemistry, temperature or treatment.

Furnace & Equipment

- Monitor furnace condition, lining condition, coils, cooling system and other critical equipment.
- Report abnormalities, breakdowns and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Coordinate with Maintenance for preventive and breakdown maintenance.
- Ensure proper furnace cleaning and housekeeping.
- Follow furnace operating procedures and equipment manufacturer guidelines.

E. Manpower Supervision

- Allocate work to furnace operators, helpers and melting workers.
- Monitor attendance, discipline and work performance.
- Provide on-job training to workers.
- Ensure workers follow PPE and safe working practices.
- Maintain proper shift handover and communication.

F. Safety

- Strictly enforce foundry safety rules in the melting area.
- Ensure use of required PPE such as helmet, face shield, heat-resistant clothing, gloves, safety shoes and other specified PPE.
- Prevent water/moisture contamination near molten metal.
- Ensure safe handling of molten metal, ladles and charging materials.
- Follow emergency procedures for furnace failure, metal spillage, fire and other incidents.
- Report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately.

G. Production & Cost Control

- Achieve daily/monthly production targets.
- Control melting loss, metal yield and rejection.
- Monitor power/energy consumption per tonne of metal.
- Reduce metal wastage and unnecessary alloy consumption.
- Maintain optimum furnace utilization and minimize downtime.

5. Qualification

- Diploma / ITI / B.E./B.Tech. in Metallurgy, Mechanical or related engineering field, as applicable.
- Foundry/melting-related technical knowledge preferred.

6. Experience

- 5–10 years of relevant foundry experience, preferably in melting operations.
- Experience with induction furnace melting, charge calculation, chemical control and molten-metal handling preferred.
- Supervisory experience in a foundry production environment is desirable.

7. Required Skills

- Knowledge of foundry melting processes.
- Knowledge of ferrous/non-ferrous metallurgy as applicable.
- Furnace operation and charge calculation.
- Basic understanding of chemical analysis and spectrometer reports.
- Manpower handling and shift supervision.
- Production planning and problem-solving.
- Safety and quality awareness.
- Valuable communication and coordination skills.

8. Authority

- Stop unsafe melting operations when necessary.
- Reject incorrect or contaminated charge materials.
- Hold molten metal when quality parameters are not within specification.
- Allocate manpower and work within the assigned shift.
- Report production, quality and safety deviations to management.

9. Overall Responsibility

The Melting Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient and controlled melting operations, producing the required quantity and grade of molten metal with the specified chemical composition and temperature, while minimizing losses, rejection, energy consumption and downtime.

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
