- Role Purpose
The RFQ Design Engineer is responsible for managing engineering activities related to RFQs, ensuring timely completion of technical deliverables, evaluating product manufacturability and assembly feasibility, and coordinating with customers, suppliers, and internal cross-functional teams. The role requires a solid understanding of sheet metal, machining, welding, joining and surface treatment processes, along with the ability to translate customer requirements into technically feasible manufacturing solutions.
Key Responsibilities
1. RFQ Planning & Work Management
- Maintain and regularly update the RFQ tracker with the current status of assigned activities.
- Set priorities for RFQ-related engineering activities based on customer requirements, timelines and business priorities.
- Track allocated tasks against the agreed planning and ensure timely completion.
- Identify delays, technical dependencies and bottlenecks and escalate them proactively.
- Ensure timely submission of all engineering deliverables required for RFQ completion.
2. Design & Manufacturing Feasibility
- Review customer drawings, specifications and technical requirements for RFQ activities.
- Evaluate Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) feasibility of products.
- Assess feasibility considering sheet metal, machining, welding, joining and surface treatment processes.
- Coordinate with the shop floor and manufacturing teams to validate process feasibility and identify potential manufacturing challenges.
- Suggest design/process improvements wherever required to improve manufacturability, assembly and cost effectiveness.
3. NPD & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Participate in NPD kick-off meetings and understand project requirements, scope and deliverables.
- Participate in Manufacturing Feasibility Review Meetings along with the Cross-Functional Team (CFT).
- Coordinate with Product Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchase, Production and other relevant functions for timely closure of RFQ activities.
- Ensure technical inputs and feasibility concerns are communicated effectively to concerned stakeholders.
4. Customer & Supplier Technical Coordination
- Prepare and maintain a technical query list / OIL (Open Issue List) for clarification of customer requirements.
- Coordinate with customers to obtain timely clarification on technical requirements, drawings, specifications and design-related queries.
- Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers wherever required.
- Communicate technical requirements and clarify engineering issues with suppliers in coordination with the concerned functions.
- Maintain proper records of technical discussions, clarifications and agreed actions.
5. BOM, Drawing & Engineering Deliverables
- Review and validate Costing BOM and Manufacturing BOM for RFQ requirements.
- Prepare and release required DXF files and Snap BOM for production.
- Ensure engineering drawings, documents and related data are complete, accurate and available within the required timeline.
- Verify consistency between customer requirements, engineering data, BOM and manufacturing requirements.
- Support production with necessary engineering information during RFQ-to-production transition.
6. Data Management & Documentation
- Maintain an effective engineering data management mechanism for RFQ-related drawings, BOMs, technical queries, revisions and other documents.
- Ensure proper identification,
revision control, traceability and retrieval of engineering data.
- Maintain updated records of RFQ status, technical clarifications, design changes and deliverables.
- Ensure timely closure and documentation of open engineering points.
7. Team Discipline & Work Practices
- Maintain discipline and adherence to defined processes within the assigned team/work area.
- Ensure timely reporting, task follow-up and compliance with established engineering procedures.
- Demonstrate ownership, accountability and proactive communication for assigned RFQ activities.
Required Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Good knowledge of sheet metal manufacturing processes and their design considerations.
- Good knowledge of machining processes and manufacturing feasibility.
- Knowledge of welding processes and relevant standards.
- Knowledge of mechanical joining methods and relevant standards.
- Knowledge of surface treatment processes and relevant standards.
- Understanding of DFM and DFA principles.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical requirements.
- Knowledge of BOM preparation and engineering documentation.
- Working knowledge of DXF and Snap BOM preparation.
- Proficiency in CAD software, preferably Solid Edge and AutoCAD; experience with other CAD software may also be considered.
- Good coordination and communication skills for interaction with customers, suppliers and internal CFTs.
Relevant experience in Product Design, RFQ Engineering, Mechanical Design, Sheet Metal Design, Manufacturing Engineering or similar engineering functions will be preferred.
