Role Purpose
The Technical Manager owns the technical integrity, engineering interface and asset maintenance strategy for the Bangalore lab facility, ensuring safe and reliable operation of process, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation systems, and maintaining a clearly defined engineering boundary between facilities-managed and lab-managed infrastructure. The role provides technical assurance across specialist and statutory maintenance activities and acts as the primary technical authority supporting the Site Lead.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Asset Management
Own the site's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS — e.g. Corrigo), including work order logging, scheduling and tracking for workplace and lab assets.
Define and maintain the technical boundary between facilities (JLL)-managed and lab-managed infrastructure, including power supply, compressed air, fume hood extraction, oil sinks/sumps, gas detection systems and electrical distribution.
Coordinate specialist engineering design review and technical sign-off for process, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation & control (I&C;) systems.
Maintain current inspection, maintenance and licensing records, including certificates, within the site's document/records platform.
Maintenance Delivery
Oversee scheduled (planned) and corrective maintenance delivery for lab-critical infrastructure and utility systems.
Manage specialist statutory inspection programmes, including pressure vessels, relief valves and oxygen-clean systems, via certified inspection bodies.
Manage specialist laboratory analytical instrument calibration and maintenance programmes (e.g. GC, SEM, DI water systems) via OEM-certified technicians.
Maintain and test gas detection systems across the gas yard, enclosure and laboratory areas.
High-Hazard Systems Oversight
Provide technical oversight of high-pressure,
high-temperature and hazardous process system operation and maintenance, including PESO-certified equipment.
Oversee process gas distribution, hazardous/toxic gas handling and gas detection/alarm systems, coordinating with specialist industrial gas partners.
Support technical input into Management of Change (MOC) assessments for engineering and process changes.
Vendor & Specialist Partner Management
Manage relationships with OEM-certified technicians, calibration providers, and specialist engineering and industrial gas partners.
Validate the technical scope, quality and completeness of specialist partner deliverables.
Coordinate scheduling and site access for specialist statutory inspections and calibration visits.
Technical Documentation & Governance
Own technical drawing review, engineering documentation accuracy verification, and coordination with document control.
Support HAZOP/HAZID technical input and closure of engineering-related actions during design and transition phases.
Maintain the operating boundary definitions between fixed building/workplace assets and specialist lab systems for maintenance dispatch purposes.
Commissioning & Continuous Improvement
Support commissioning assurance for lab systems (gas, venting, extraction) during site transition and any future infrastructure changes.
Identify and implement engineering reliability improvements and support capital project scoping for lab infrastructure upgrades.
Qualification & Education
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, Process, Chemical or Instrumentation Engineering — essential.
Chartered Engineer status or equivalent recognised professional engineering licensure — preferred.
Certification & Licenses
- Working knowledge of PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) requirements and certification pathways — essential.
- Process Safety Management (PSM) training.
- Familiarity with statutory inspection frameworks and accreditation bodies (e.g. ASME, API) for pressure equipment.
- CMMS platform proficiency/certification (e.g. Corrigo) — desirable.
Experience Required
- 10+ years' experience in engineering or technical management roles within process industries, industrial laboratories, or similarly regulated facilities.
- Hands-on experience with high-hazard systems, process gas systems, and specialist inspection/calibration regimes.
- Experience managing outsourced or specialist technical vendors and validating their technical delivery.
- Experience supporting or leading HAZOP/HAZID studies and engineering risk assessments.
Technical Competencies
- Strong working knowledge across process, mechanical, electrical and I&C; engineering disciplines.
- Understanding of PSSR, PESO and relevant statutory inspection frameworks for pressure and hazardous systems.
- Proficiency in CMMS and maintenance planning methodologies.
- Working knowledge of Management of Change (MOC) and technical risk assessment methodology.
Leadership & Behavioural Competencies
Technical credibility with the ability to constructively challenge specialist partners on scope and quality.
Structured, methodical problem-solving approach to engineering and maintenance issues.
Effective cross-functional coordination with the HSSE Manager and Site Lead.
Vendor performance management and contract technical assurance.
Clear technical communication skills, able to translate technical detail for non-technical stakeholders.
