POSITION DESCRIPTION
Job Title:
· Freelance Research Assistant – XR-Aware O-RAN Simulation & Validation Framework
Job Purpose:
- Implement the O-RAN simulation environment described in the client's brief - proposal (scope: simulation only, no hardware testbed).
- Build and run controlled experiments that test the papers' main claims (H1-H5).
- Produce reproducible results, tables and plots from saved traces, suitable for journal submission.
Required Qualification:
- Master's degree (preferred) in Electronics/Communication Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications or a related field.
- Candidates with a bachelor's degree and solid applied experience in 5G/O-RAN simulation may also be considered.
Tools to be Familiar:
- Simulation: ns-3 (strongly preferred), or similar tools such as OMNeT++ or Python discrete-event simulation.
- Programming: C++ and Python (NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib).
- O-RAN concepts: O-DU/O-RU, split 7.2x fronthaul, near-RT RIC, xApps, E2/KPM, MAC scheduling.
- Cloud: Docker (Kubernetes is an advantage).
- Statistics and writing: SciPy/statsmodels or R; Word/LaTeX/Overleaf; Excel/Google Sheets.
Required Experience
- 1-3 years in wireless/5G network simulation or research.
- Experience with MAC schedulers, traffic modelling, or QoS/latency analysis.
- Experience designing repeated experiments with seeds, confidence intervals and paired comparisons.
- Knowledge of XR/video traffic, massive MIMO, or RIC/xApp development is required.
Required Knowledge/Skills
- Understanding of how scheduling, fronthaul delay/jitter/loss and control latency affect deadline misses.
- Ability to implement,
unit-test and verify models (queue accounting, PRB limits, frame counts).
- Reproducibility discipline: version control, one scenario configuration, fixed workloads and impairment traces.
- Honest reporting: results are reported as the implementation produces them, not tuned to match the brief's numbers.
- Clear technical writing for result sections, figures and tables.
Job Description
- Core build: Implement the virtual O-DU (MAC scheduling, PRB allocation, RLC queues, HARQ abstraction) with throughput-aware and XR-aware schedulers.
- XR traffic: Build the XR frame generator with a clear rule for when a frame meets or misses its deadline.
- Fronthaul and MIMO: Add configurable delay, jitter, loss and capacity limits, and model how MIMO layers raise transport demand.
- RIC/xApp loop: Implement a mock RIC with KPI reporting, policy decisions and delayed enforcement.
- Containers and measurement: Containerize services, capture CPU/memory pressure, and export raw traces.
- XOVI scoring (Gate 2): Implement all six components with published weights, thresholds and sensitivity checks.
- Experiments H1-H5: Run the controlled sweeps with repeated runs, uncertainty and effect sizes.
- Reproducibility (Gate 1): Provide scripts that regenerate all tables and plots from raw traces.
- Coordination: Weekly status updates to the project coordinator; flag any mismatch with the brief's preliminary results with specific alternatives based on the discussion with the concern technical experts.
