Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer specializing in heavy sheet metal and hydro gate fabrication. In this role, you will lead the design, development, and engineering of large-scale water control structures, including radial, slide, roller, and mitre gates. You will transform complex engineering concepts into precise manufacturing drawings, ensuring structural integrity, regulatory compliance, and seamless factory fabrication.

Key Responsibilities

- Product Design & Modeling: Create detailed 3D models and 2D fabrication drawings for hydro-mechanical equipment, heavy sheet metal assemblies, and structural steel components using CAD software.
- Structural Analysis: Perform mechanical calculations, including structural stress, fluid pressure load distributions, weld sizing, and deflection analysis to ensure gates withstand extreme hydraulic forces.
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM): Optimize designs specifically for heavy fabrication processes, including heavy plate rolling, plasma/laser cutting, heavy welding (GMAW/FCAW), and large-scale machining.
- Bill of Materials (BOM): Generate accurate and structured BOMs, cutting lists, and material specifications for procurement and production planning.
- Standards & Compliance: Ensure all designs comply with international industry standards such as AWS (welding), ASME, ASTM, and relevant hydro-power standards
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with project managers, welding engineers,



and the workshop fabrication team to resolve manufacturing issues and improve production efficiency.
- Quality Assurance Support: Define tolerances, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T;), and non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements for critical structural welds.

Required Qualifications & Skills

- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Experience: 3 to 5+ years of proven experience in heavy steel fabrication, heavy sheet metal design, or hydro-mechanical equipment (gates, hoists, penstocks, or cranes).
- Software Proficiency: Advanced mastery of 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and 2D AutoCAD.
- FEA Knowledge: Experience conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using tools like ANSYS or SolidWorks Simulation for structural verification.
- Technical Knowledge: Solid understanding of heavy plate bending, geometric tolerances, welding symbols, and raw material properties (e.g., carbon steel, stainless steel, clad plates).
- Problem Solving: Excellent spatial reasoning and analytical skills to troubleshoot fabrication constraints before they reach the shop floor.
