Job Summary
The Lead System Designer (LSD) is the overarching system design leader across all engineering teams on a product program. The LSD is accountable for overall product design, quality, reliability, and performance, and represents all engineering aspects of the product. The LSD owns the technical scope of the product, as defined by product management inputs, and leads engineering teams to deliver the technical content, performance, and quality of the program under the design control process.
This is a global role. The LSD sits on the software core team and system software team, and optionally on the program extended core team.
Key Responsibilities
- 10+ years in system or software engineering, with experience leading multi-team technical programs
- Strong systems engineering skills: requirements management, decomposition, interface definition, traceability, risk management
- Experience with design controls and regulated product development (e.g., IEC 62304, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, FDA design controls)
- Experience with Agile at scale (Protected, PI planning, Rally or similar)
- Working knowledge of DevOps, CI/CD, and branching and release strategies
- Excellent communication, influencing, and decision-making skills
Skill Requirements
- Act as the end-to-end technical authority for the product, with responsibility for the full product development lifecycle
- Partner with subsystem product owners, who own SSRS (Software System Requirement Specifications), subsystem architecture and design, V&V;, performance, reliability, releases, and documentation, on design, prioritization, and integration issues
- Document improvement opportunities and drive process improvements

- Product delivered against technical scope, performance, and reliability targets
- Quality metrics within thresholds (SPR trends, escapes, vulnerabilities, installed base complaints)

- Clean design reviews and audits, with full requirements-to-verification traceability
- Predictable PI and integration point delivery
