Hardware Design Engineer – Fire & Safety Domain

About Potter Global Technologies & Hinduja Tech

Potter Global Technologies is a trusted global leader in fire, life-safety, and emergency communication systems, known for its reliability, innovation, and strong legacy of protecting people and critical infrastructure. As part of its continued global expansion, Potter is investing in its India engineering presence to strengthen long-term product development capabilities and accelerate innovation for global markets.

In collaboration with Hinduja Tech, an engineering and digital solutions leader within the Hinduja Group, Potter is establishing the Potter India Engineering Center (IEC) in Pune. This center will serve as a key extension of Potter's global engineering organization, bringing together Potter's product vision and domain leadership with Hinduja Tech's strong engineering ecosystem and delivery experience.

This collaboration is intended to accelerate innovation, strengthen Potter's global engineering capabilities, and establish a high-caliber engineering center in India that supports the development of Potter's next generation of fire and life-safety products for global markets.

At the same time, it creates an opportunity for candidates to work in a product-based company environment with the potential for long-term association and meaningful growth opportunities.

About Job Role

We are seeking a hands-on Hardware Design Engineer with 3-7 years of experience to develop, modify, verify, and support electronic products used in Potter's fire and life-safety portfolio. The role supports new product development, product enhancements, value engineering, component lifecycle, compliance, and production needs. Working with the Hardware Engineering Manager and experienced engineers, the candidate will own defined circuit or board-level assignments, contribute to schematic and PCB development, bring up prototypes, execute laboratory testing, and maintain clear engineering records. Assignments may involve new designs, controlled redesigns, alternate components, platform migrations, or corrective actions based on quality and field feedback.

Key Responsibilities

Hardware Design and Engineering

1. • Develop hardware work packages for new products, product enhancements, redesigns, sustenance, and value-engineering initiatives.
2. • Review requirements, schematics, PCB files, BOMs, datasheets, product documentation, test procedures,

and field or manufacturing issues for assigned work.
3. • Prepare I/O lists, interface tables, component comparisons, design calculations, and technical notes under guidance from the engineering lead.
4. • Design or modify microcontroller, power, clock, reset, debug, memory, communication, sensing, protection, relay, indicator, and supervised I/O circuits as assigned.
5. • Select components, create or verify symbols and footprints, check derating and lifecycle status, add test points, and support PCB placement and routing reviews.
6. • Maintain accurate schematics, BOMs, calculations, interface documents, design notes, and engineering-change records.

Value Engineering and Product Lifecycle

1. • Analyse BOM items and circuit function to identify lower-cost alternatives, component commonization, part-count reduction, and supply-chain risk reduction.
2. • Compare and bench-test alternate components for electrical fit, functional equivalence, thermal margin, reliability, availability, and compliance impact.
3. • Work with component engineering and sourcing to document lifecycle status, approved manufacturers, lead-time risks, and qualification evidence.

Bring Up, Verification and Compliance

1. • Support prototype assembly, inspection, rework, power-on checks, current-limited bring-up, firmware loading, and systematic fault isolation.
2. • Execute approved functional, power, I/O, communication, fault, thermal, transient, ESD, EFT, surge, EMC pre-compliance, and system-integration tests as applicable.
3. • Use oscilloscopes, logic analysers, DMMs, programmable supplies, electronic loads, and protocol tools to capture repeatable measurements and troubleshoot failures.
4. • Document test results, failures, root cause, corrective actions, and regression evidence in accordance with the development process.
5. • Support sample preparation, test modes, setup records, and evidence for UL, FM, FCC, and other applicable compliance or certification testing.

Integration and Production Support

1.

• Work with firmware engineers during board bring-up, peripheral validation, interface integration, and system-level testing.
2. • Support PCB layout, suppliers, validation, manufacturing, ICT or FCT updates, pilot builds, and production phase-in for approved changes.
3. • Report progress, technical risks, defects, and test results clearly and close assigned actions with objective evidence.

Qualifications

1. • 3-7 years of hands-on embedded hardware or electronic product-design experience, with meaningful involvement in schematic design, prototype bring-up, and verification.
2. • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication, Instrumentation, or a related discipline.
3. • Practical knowledge of microcontroller-based analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuits, power supplies, sensing, protection, drivers, and serial communications.
4. • Ability to read and modify schematics, interpret datasheets, perform design calculations, select components, review PCB layouts, and maintain accurate BOMs.
5. • Hands-on laboratory debugging experience using common measurement, power, load, and protocol-debugging equipment.
6. • Experience with Altium Designer or an equivalent electronic-design tool and with controlled engineering documentation or change-management systems.
7. • A disciplined approach to test execution, result recording, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and regression verification.

Preferred Experience

1. • Prior experience with fire alarm, fire and life-safety, emergency communication, building-automation, or another regulated electronic product is strongly preferred.
2. • Participation in UL and FCC compliance or certification testing is strongly preferred; exposure to UL 864 or FM Approvals is an advantage.
3. • Experience with Renesas or similar microcontrollers, processor replacement, logic-level migration, or legacy-board redesign is preferred.
4. • Exposure to fire-alarm communication loops, notification circuits, supervised I/O, relays, annunciators, battery-backed products, or low-voltage power systems is advantageous.
