Balstern Digital is hiring a Lead Android Engineer for a long-term European railway digitalisation project.

You will take technical ownership of a greenfield Android application, lead a small senior engineering team, and remain hands-on with architecture, development, integration and delivery.

What you’ll do• Define and own the Android application architecture, modular structure and engineering standards.
• Lead development using Kotlin + Jetpack Compose.
• Design robust app state, offline behaviour, caching, reconnection and recovery flows.
• Integrate with real-time/backend systems using technologies such as MQTT, WebSocket and XML/XSD.
• Guide implementation of authentication, SSO, JWT, TLS, secure storage and Android Keystore.
• Work with UX designers and Figma to build responsive, high-performance tablet interfaces.
• Lead code reviews, mentor developers and drive testing, CI/CD and release quality.
• Work directly with European customer and partner engineering teams on technical decisions and delivery.





What we’re looking for• 8+ years of software development experience with a robust Android background.
• Strong hands-on Kotlin and Jetpack Compose experience.
• Experience owning Android architecture and technical design.
• Strong knowledge of Coroutines, Flow/StateFlow, MVVM/MVI, Clean Architecture and modularisation.
• Experience with real-time or unreliable connectivity, offline-first design and state recovery.
• Good understanding of mobile security, authentication and secure storage.
• Experience with automated testing, code reviews and CI/CD.
• Strong communication and technical leadership skills.
