Description
We are seeking an experienced Principal Engineer - Water Resources to join the Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India and support the delivery of mine water and surface water projects for Canada. The role combines senior technical delivery, quality oversight and day-to-day management of GCC resources assigned to Canadian projects. Reporting to the Mine Water Team Leader based in GCC India, the successful candidate will coordinate closely with Canadian project managers and technical leaders to align scope, priorities, programme, budget and quality expectations. The role will also develop the capability, consistency and integration of the GCC Mine Water team.
Responsibilities
• Lead complex mine water and surface water assignments from conceptual planning through detailed
design and construction or operational support.
• Develop and review site-wide mine water management strategies, including water balances, climate
resilience considerations and closure requirements.
• Deliver and oversee hydrologic and hydraulic assessments supporting mine operations,
infrastructure, environmental assessment and closure planning.
• Lead the design and review of surface water infrastructure, including channels, culverts, diversions,
spillways, ponds, ditches and erosion or sediment controls.
• Integrate mine infrastructure, tailings and water management systems into practical, coordinated
and technically defensible solutions.
• Provide senior technical review, quality assurance and risk-based judgement for work produced by
GCC resources supporting Canada.
• Act as the principal coordination point for GCC resources, working with the GCC India Mine Water
Team Leader and Canadian project leadership.
• Mentor engineers and strengthen technical standards, best practices, knowledge sharing and safety
culture across the team.
Leadership and Resource Management
• Manage the day-to-day delivery of GCC engineers supporting Canadian mine water projects,
including task planning, work allocation, progress monitoring and coordination.
• Work with the Mine Water Team Leader, GCC India, to plan capacity, balance workloads, support
utilization and identify recruitment or development needs.
• Confirm that assignments have clear scope, budget, schedule, inputs, interfaces, review
requirements and acceptance criteria before work begins.
• Provide coaching, technical guidance and structured feedback to support employee development
and consistent project performance.
• Promote effective collaboration across time zones and maintain clear communication between GCC
resources and Canada-based project teams.
• Escalate delivery risks, resourcing constraints, technical issues and dependency gaps to the GCC
India Mine Water Team Leader and relevant project leaders.
Technical and Project Responsibilities
• Lead or review hydrologic studies, flood estimation, rainfall-runoff modelling, snowmelt assessments,
frequency analysis and climate-change sensitivity assessments.
• Lead or review 1D and 2D hydraulic modelling, floodplain mapping, dam-break or breach
assessments, culvert and bridge hydraulics, and scour or erosion assessments.
• Develop and review deterministic and probabilistic mine water balances, operational water
management plans and water management infrastructure concepts.
• Prepare and review technical reports, design criteria, calculations, drawings, specifications, cost
inputs, proposals and client presentations.
• Support project planning and control by monitoring GCC scope, schedule, budget, quality, interfaces
and change requirements.
• Apply relevant Canadian project requirements, client standards and regulatory expectations in
coordination with the responsible Canadian professionals.
• Contribute to technical innovation, automation, standardization and lessons learned that improve
quality and delivery efficiency.
Client and Business Support
• Build trusted working relationships with Canadian project managers, discipline leads and technical
specialists.
• Contribute to proposals, work plans, estimates, schedules and staffing strategies for mine water
opportunities.
• Support the transfer of suitable project work to the GCC and help define practical work packages,
review gates and communication protocols.
• Represent GCC Mine Water capability in internal technical and resourcing discussions and support
strategic capability growth.
Qualifications
The Skills That Set You Apart
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Environmental
Engineering or a related discipline.
• Typically 12+ years of relevant experience in water resources engineering, including strong
consulting and mining exposure.
• Demonstrated technical leadership on complex, multidisciplinary mine water and surface water
projects.
• Advanced expertise in hydrology, hydraulics, flood risk, mine water management, water balances
and surface water infrastructure design.
• Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modelling tools such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, GoldSim,
TUFLOW, InfoWorks, PCSWMM or similar, together with GIS tools.
• Experience managing or coordinating engineers in a multidisciplinary and geographically distributed
delivery environment.
• Robust technical judgement, quality focus, communication skills and collaborative leadership
capability.
• Experience supporting Canadian mining projects or working with Canadian technical and regulatory
requirements is highly desirable.
Professional Registration
• Professional engineering registration in India, Canada or another recognised jurisdiction is desirable.
• Where professional sign-off or a Qualified Professional designation is required, responsibilities will be
undertaken only within the individual’s authorised jurisdiction, competence and company
governance requirements.
Success in the Role
Success will be demonstrated through safe, high-quality and predictable project delivery; effective
management and development of GCC resources; strong integration with Canadian teams; improved
capability and repeat work; and timely escalation and resolution of delivery risks.
