Department Overview
Bain's Product, Practice & Knowledge (PPK) department has played a vital role in harnessing the best of our consulting staffs' individual and collective expertise for over 20 years. Within PPK, each practice supports teams across the globe with deep expertise and knowledge. Our practices play a critical role in Bain's commercial success and are a key strategic priority.
PPK is continually focused on creating a stronger, more scalable, efficient and effective PPK organization. The PPK Operations team will help achieve this by developing and improving processes, tools, and communications to better support our PPK teams.
What You'll Do
The Senior Analyst is a technical builder on the PPK Operations team. Where the Analyst supports defined analytical workstreams and the Operations Manager owns the simplification agenda end to end, this role sits between the two: it takes ownership of complete solutions from problem definition through build and adoption, working with limited supervision, and is expected to bring the technical depth that makes automation and AI-enabled delivery real.
The distinguishing expectation of this role is speed of build. We are looking for someone who uses AI tools and low-code platforms to deliver dashboards, automations and analyses in a fraction of the time traditional approaches require, and who can explain and defend the logic behind what they build.
Automation and AI-enabled solution build (~40%)
- Designs and builds automated solutions that remove manual effort from recurring PPK processes, using Power Automate, SharePoint, Excel and scripting as appropriate
- Uses AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT as a core part of the build workflow to accelerate development, generate and debug code and formulas, structure unfamiliar data, and prototype solutions quickly
- Prototypes and deploys AI agents and assistants for defined PPK use cases; identifies where an agentic approach outperforms a conventional one
- Translates business requirements into working logic: data flows, conditional rules, error handling and validation, so solutions hold up in production and not only in demo
- Documents what is built so solutions can be maintained, handed over and reused across practices
- Maintains a healthy skepticism about AI output, validating results before they inform decisions or reach stakeholders
Operations project delivery (~30%)
- Owns discrete PPK Operations workstreams from scoping through delivery,
with the Operations Manager as thought partner rather than reviewer of every step
- Contributes to the PPK Operations project backlog by identifying candidates, sizing effort and impact, and recommending sequencing
- Engages internal stakeholders directly to gather requirements, clarify scope, secure inputs and drive adoption of what is delivered
- Runs test and learn pilots, captures what worked and what did not, and folds those lessons into the next build
- Proactively flags gaps, dependencies and tradeoffs rather than waiting to be asked
Analytics and reporting (~20%)
- Builds and owns Power BI dashboards end to end, covering data modelling, DAX, Power Query and visual design, applying Bain visual standards
- Rebuilds and streamlines existing reporting so recurring outputs run with minimal manual intervention
- Performs quantitative analysis on PPK operational data and derives insights that stand on their own rather than only presenting the numbers
- Triangulates data across multiple systems and stakeholders, resolving inconsistencies and flagging data quality issues at source
- Produces insight-driven output in the right format for the audience, whether a dashboard, a deck, a model or a written recommendation
Teaming and apprenticeship (10%)
- Coaches junior analysts on technical craft, including tool selection, prompt design, dashboard structure and automation hygiene
- Reviews the technical quality of work produced by others on the team and raises the standard through direct, constructive feedback
- Shares reusable assets, templates and best practices across PPK so solutions built once are used many times
- Evangelizes the art of the possible to other teams and builds credibility for new ways of working through demonstrated results
- Contributes as a member of the broader PPK community through projects, training and experience sharing
About You
Technical skills: required
- Practical, daily working fluency with AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT, used to build and ship real deliverables rather than to draft text; you can point to work that was materially faster or better because of how you used them
- Strong Power BI capability including data modelling, DAX and Power Query, with the ability to take a dashboard from raw data to a stakeholder-ready product without handoffs
- Working knowledge of programming, in any language, sufficient that logic building is second nature: you understand data structures, control flow, functions and debugging, and can read, adapt and reason about code even where you do not write production software
- Advanced Excel, including complex formulas, structured data handling and comfort with large or messy datasets
- Robust PowerPoint skills with the ability to structure a clear argument,
not only format slides
Technical skills: preferred
- Experience across the Microsoft ecosystem, particularly Power Automate, SharePoint lists and libraries, and Power Apps
- Experience building AI agents or assistants, including prompt engineering, tool and API integration, and evaluating agent output
- Process automation experience of any kind, whether scripted, low-code or RPA based, with a track record of removing recurring manual work
- Python or a comparable scripting language for data manipulation, API work and automation
- Familiarity with APIs and how systems exchange data; comfort reading documentation and working out an integration independently
- Exposure to Alteryx, Tableau or comparable analytics and data preparation tools
Experience and mindset
- 4 to 6 years of experience in a professional services, consulting, analytics, knowledge management or operations environment
- Demonstrated ownership of solutions end to end, from ambiguous problem statement through to a working, adopted product
- A self-learner with a genuine desire to figure it out; you pick up new tools quickly and without being taught
- A passion for changing how work gets done by adopting new approaches and new technology, paired with the judgement to know when the traditional approach is still the right one
- Structured problem-solving: you break ambiguous questions into clear hypotheses, analyses and implications
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical choices to a non-technical audience and establish credibility with senior stakeholders
- The maturity and integrity to handle confidential information and to use technology, including AI, responsibly
- Ability to operate independently, comfortable with a remote supervisor and wider team, managing competing priorities with minimal supervision
- Known for high-quality work, attentive to detail and well-organized
- Bachelor of Arts, Engineering, Science or equivalent undergraduate degree with strong academic credentials; Statistics, Business, Economics, Computer Science or Analytics concentrations also applicable
