As part of the CADS Software Solutions Division, you will help deliver high-quality analysis, design, and detailing tools for the construction industry. As an Engineer or Senior Engineer, you will specify and verify engineering calculations, define requirements, and ensure compliance with relevant Codes of Practice.
You will support the development team by answering engineering queries, reviewing builds, and performing rigorous verification and validation before release. You will also assist customers by providing expert engineering guidance and second-line support.
This role requires solid Civil/Structural Engineering knowledge, attention to detail, and a well-rounded, mature approach.
Key Responsibilities Engineer / Senior Engineer
1. Engineering Calculation Specification
- Stay current with engineering best practices and develop expertise in relevant
areas such as structural analysis, geotechnics, and the design of steel, concrete,
composite, masonry, timber, and temporary works.
- Research engineering topics and applicable Codes of Practice with the Lead
Engineer.
- Build strong knowledge of existing CADS software to maintain, extend, and
ensure consistency across products.
- Develop proficiency in third-party tools supported by CADS (e.g., Scia Engineer,
Revit).
- Understand competitor software to inform and improve CADS solutions.
- Prepare detailed engineering specifications and calculations, submitting work
for checking and approval.
2. Calculation Verification
- Define the validation approach with the Lead Engineer, including benchmarking
against manual calculations or other software.
- Validate software calculations, documenting results in formal validation reports.
- Create benchmark models for verification and validation.
- Review software builds, identify engineering issues, raise bugs, and assist the
development team in resolving them.
- Ensure all engineering functionality is technically sound and complete prior to
release.
3.
Engineering Support
- Support customers, the CADS Support team, and the Lead Engineer with
engineering-related queries not resolved by first-line support.
- Contribute to engineering aspects of product launches and help drive successful
customer adoption.
Required Skills
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum of 6 years experience in structural design engineering.
- Proven experience either as a practising Structural Engineer or in developing
Structural Engineering software.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills.
Location : Hybrid / Work from home, any location, terms negotiable
Civil / Structural Engineer Role in the CAE Software Development Team
The role of a Civil/Structural Engineer in our CAE software development team is different from a conventional structural engineering role.
Instead of designing individual buildings or structures for a particular project, you will be helping us develop structural analysis and design software that engineers can use across many different projects.
A major part of the role is to understand engineering requirements and design codes and translate them into clear requirements that software developers can implement. For example, when implementing a steel or concrete design check according to Eurocode or another standard, you would study the relevant clauses, equations, conditions and limits, and explain the required calculation through notes, spreadsheets, worked examples or similar methods.
You do not necessarily need to be a software programmer. However,
you should be able to understand an engineering calculation thoroughly, break it down logically and explain it step by step to a developer.
Another important responsibility is verification and validation. Once a feature has been implemented, you would independently check whether the software results are correct using hand calculations, Excel, published design examples, analytical solutions or comparison with established engineering software.
You would also help investigate engineering-related problems reported by customers or testers, determine whether the issue is related to the calculation, design-code interpretation, modelling or software implementation, and work with developers to resolve it.
The role also requires looking at the product from the perspective of a practising structural engineer, ensuring that the workflow, inputs, defaults, warnings, calculations and reports are technically correct and practical to use.
You will work closely with software developers, testers, other Structural Engineers and Product Management. As you gain experience, you may also contribute to new product features, design-code updates, customer requirements, technical documentation and R&D; activities.
We normally look for a good foundation in structural analysis, reinforced concrete and steel design, structural mechanics and design codes. Knowledge of Eurocodes and British Standards would be particularly useful. Experience with structural analysis or design software is also valuable.
Programming experience is not essential, although an interest in software, Excel, numerical methods or automation would be an advantage.
In simple terms, our software developers know how to build the software, while the Structural Engineers make sure that the engineering inside that software is correct.
The role therefore acts as the bridge between structural engineering, design standards and software development.
