The founding of Metropolitan dates to as early as 1898 and Momentum traces its roots to being established in 1966. Momentum Group was formed from the merger of Metropolitan and Momentum, two sizeable and diverse insurance-based financial services companies in South Africa and was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 1 December 2010.

Role Purpose

Design, develop, enhance and support Java-based applications and microservices.
Participate across the software development lifecycle while leveraging Agile
methodologies, cloud-native technologies and AI-assisted development practices to
improve solution delivery and code quality

Duties & Responsibilities

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/KRAs/KPIs:
Application Development
• Design, develop, test, and maintain Java-based applications and services.
• Build scalable microservices and distributed systems using Spring Boot and related
frameworks.
• Develop and maintain Angular-based front-end applications and user interfaces.
• Create and integrate RESTful APIs and web services.
• Maintain, enhance, and support existing applications and platforms.
Solution Design & Architecture




• Participate in solution design sessions and contribute to technical architecture
decisions.
• Apply object-oriented analysis, design principles, and development patterns to
build maintainable solutions.
• Interpret UML diagrams and collaborate with architects, analysts, and
development teams.
• Design and implement secure, scalable, and high-performing applications.
Integration & Cloud Technologies
• Develop and support integrations using REST, SOAP, messaging technologies, and
APIs.
• Work with technologies such as JMS, IBM MQ, AWS SQS, XML, and JSON.
• Support cloud-native solutions and deployment practices within AWS and related
environments.
• Contribute to application monitoring, performance optimisation, and reliability
improvements.
Quality Engineering & DevOps
• Develop and execute unit, integration, and automated tests.
• Apply best practices for error handling, security, code quality, and performance
optimisation.
• Participate in CI/CD and build management processes using tools such as Git and
Gradle.
• Support production and non-production environments and resolve technical issues
when required

Agile Delivery & Collaboration
• Participate in Agile ceremonies and support delivery across multiple initiatives.




• Collaborate closely with Business Analysts, Solution Architects, Testers, and
Product Owners.
• Contribute to story refinement and provide technical input into solution design
and backlog management.
• Mentor and support team members where appropriate, particularly at Senior level
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
• Explore and adopt recent technologies, frameworks, and development practices.
• Utilise AI-assisted development tools and practices to improve productivity, code
quality, and solution design.
• Identify opportunities to improve system performance, stability, scalability, and
maintainability

Requirements

• Minimum 7 years of hands-on software development experience.
• Strong expertise in Java (J2EE / Spring Boot).
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
• Proven experience in RESTful API development and microservices architecture.
• Experience with DevOps and CI/CD tools is highly preferred.
