Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Technical Leader – Power Electronics, Drives & Control Systems to provide technology leadership for the development of advanced electrical power, motor drive and control solutions for land-based defence systems.
The role will provide technical ownership across the complete drives and control systems portfolio —from system architecture, technology strategy and requirements definition through detailed design, development, integration, qualification, deployment and lifecycle support.
The ideal candidate will combine deep, hands-on expertise in power electronics, electrical drives, motor control, embedded control systems and electrical architecture with proven experience in leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering complex, mission-critical systems in demanding environments.
This is a technical leadership and engineering organization leadership role, requiring the ability to operate from device/component level through system architecture and programme-level technical decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical & System Leadership
- Provide technical leadership and strategic direction for power electronics, electric drives, motion control, actuation and electrical power management systems for land defence platforms.
- Act as the senior technical authority for Power Electronics, Drives and Control Systems.
- Define system architectures, technology roadmaps, design methodologies and technical strategies aligned with defence programme and business objectives.
- Lead architecture and design reviews covering:
- System and subsystem requirements
- Functional decomposition
- Interface definition
- Architecture trade-offs
- Technology selection
- Design verification and validation
- Conduct and participate in technical reviews, design reviews, customer reviews and programme reviews.
- Ensure solutions meet stringent requirements for performance, reliability, safety, environmental robustness, EMI/EMC and mission readiness.
- Drive development of standardized, modular and reusable architectures and technology platforms across programmes.
- Provide technical leadership for electrical and controls systems used in:
- Armoured and combat vehicles
- Unmanned ground vehicles
- Weapon platforms
- Gun-turret systems
- Stabilization systems
- Mission-critical electro-mechanical systems
- Lead resolution of complex system-level technical issues, including field failures, integration challenges and root-cause investigations.
- Work closely with systems engineering, mechanical, electronics, embedded software, vehicle integration, weapons and platform teams to deliver integrated solutions.
2. Power Electronics & Electrical Drives
- Lead the development of high-performance and high-power-density power conversion systems, including:
- DC/DC converters
- DC/AC converters and inverters
- Motor drives
- Power distribution and power management systems
- Battery charging and energy management systems
- Auxiliary power systems
- High-power switching and protection systems
- Provide technical direction on the selection and application of IGBT, SiC MOSFET and other advanced power semiconductor technologies.
- Lead architecture and design optimization for high-power-density power electronics, including switching, magnetics, thermal management, protection and packaging considerations.
- Lead the development and optimization of motor-drive systems for:
- Gun-turret actuation
- Gun control and stabilization
- Weapon-system actuation
- Steering and mobility systems
- Other mission-critical actuators
- Provide technical guidance on the selection and application of:
- PMSM
- BLDC motors
- Induction motors
- Servo motors
- Special-purpose motors and actuators
- Drive optimization of power density, efficiency, energetic response, thermal performance, reliability and maintainability.
3. Control Systems & Embedded Technology
- Lead the development of advanced closed-loop control systems for motor drives, power converters and electromechanical systems.
- Provide technical direction for embedded control platforms, real-time control, sensing, signal conditioning and actuator interfaces.
- Lead development and implementation of advanced control strategies including:
- Current, torque and speed control
- Field-oriented control
- Sensorless control
- Position and motion control
- Servo control
- Power management and energy optimization
- Fault detection, isolation and diagnostics
- Provide technical leadership for real-time embedded control architectures and hardware/software co-design.
- Drive adoption of model-based engineering, MATLAB/Simulink-based development, SIL, HIL and rapid control prototyping.
- Ensure robust integration between control algorithms, embedded software, electronics, sensors, actuators and mechanical systems.
4. Defence Environment & Qualification
- Develop solutions capable of reliable operation in demanding military environments involving:
- Shock and vibration
- Temperature extremes
- Dust and humidity
- Harsh electrical power conditions
- EMI/EMC
- High operational duty cycles
- Ensure designs comply with applicable military standards, environmental qualification, EMI/EMC, electrical safety and reliability requirements.
- Provide technical leadership during qualification, environmental testing, EMC testing, system integration and field acceptance.
- Drive design approaches that improve reliability, maintainability, diagnostics and lifecycle performance.
5. People Leadership & Organization Development
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering organization covering power electronics, electrical drives, controls, embedded systems and electrical engineering.
- Build a high-performing engineering team with strong technical depth and succession capability.
- Establish technical competency frameworks, and skill-development plans.
- Set objectives and provide performance feedback, coaching and mentoring to technical professionals and engineering leaders.
- Conduct talent reviews, and resource planning.
- Develop the next generation of technical leaders and engineering managers.

The candidate should have a strong system-level understanding of electrical, mechanical, electronics, embedded software, control and actuator interfaces.
Defence Industry Experience – Preferred
Experience in one or more of the following areas will be highly desirable:
- Armoured, Artillery, Air Defence Platforms
- Gun-turret systems
- Gun control and stabilization systems
- Electro-mechanical actuation systems
- Mission-critical control systems
Experience with military environmental qualification, EMI/EMC, shock and vibration, reliability, safety and defence product qualification processes will be strongly preferred.

Education
Essential
- B.E./B.Tech. or equivalent in Electrical Engineering / Electronics & Communication Engineering / Power Electronics / Control Systems / Electrical & Electronics Engineering.
Preferred
- M.E./M.Tech. in Power Electronics / Electrical Drives / Control Systems
- Ph.D. or advanced technical specialization will be an added advantage.
Experience
- 15–20 years of relevant engineering experience in Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Control Systems or related domains.
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated people-management and engineering leadership experience.
- Proven experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams through the complete product development lifecycle.
- Significant experience in developing and deploying complex, mission-critical power electronics and control systems.
- Demonstrated experience in architecture, design, development, integration, qualification and field support of complex products.
- Experience in defence, aerospace, automotive, heavy mobility, industrial drives or other high-reliability industries is preferred.
- Direct experience in land defence systems, weapon systems, gun-turret systems, actuation or stabilization systems will be strongly preferred.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a senior technical leader and people manager who combines deep expertise in power electronics, electrical drives, motor control and embedded control systems with the ability to architect, develop and deploy complex land-defence products.
The candidate should be comfortable operating across multiple technical levels—from power semiconductor devices, gate drives, converters and motor-drive control algorithms to subsystem architecture, system integration and programme-level technical decisions.
They should have a demonstrated track record of leading engineering teams, solving complex technical problems, interacting with customers and cross-functional stakeholders, and building strong technical organizations.
This is a technology leadership role—not merely a project management position—and requires demonstrated ownership of complex engineering decisions, technical strategy and people development.
