Job Title:

· Freelance Research Assistant – EDEN-Based Schistosomiasis Modelling

Job Purpose:

· Support the development and implementation of an EDEN-based qualitative model for schistosomiasis control.

· Conduct scientific literature searches and extract relevant biological, epidemiological, environmental, and control-related variables and relationships.

· Support the conversion of literature evidence and expert knowledge into model variables, relationships, rules, constraints, and target states.

· Assist with EDEN model implementation, testing, pathway analysis, and interpretation of model outputs.

· Prepare reproducible analyses, technical documentation, figures, and research outputs suitable for scientific publication.

Required Qualification:

- Master's degree (preferred) in Bioinformatics / Computational Biology / Epidemiology / Public Health / Data Science / Systems Biology or a related field.
- Candidates with a bachelor's degree and strong applied experience in systems modelling or literature-based research may also be considered.

Tools to be Familiar:

- Programming: Python, Jupyter Notebook, basic R (for analysis and plots).
- Modelling: Rule-based or discrete-event modelling (EDEN, Petri nets, or similar), network and graph analysis.
- Literature & Data: PubMed, Scopus or Web of Science, Zotero/EndNote, Excel/Google Sheets.
- Documentation: Word/LaTeX, figure preparation tools

Required Experience

- 1–3 years of research experience in bioinformatics, computational modelling, epidemiology, or systems biology.
- Experience in structured literature searches and extracting evidence into organized datasets.
- Experience building or testing rule-based, qualitative, or dynamic system models.
- Familiarity with infectious disease or neglected tropical disease research (schistosomiasis, vector-borne disease, One Health) is required.
- Prior experience with EDEN or similar qualitative modelling frameworks is required.

Required Knowledge/Skills





- Understanding of how to convert biological, environmental, and epidemiological factors into ON/OFF (Boolean) variables with evidence-based thresholds.
- Ability to write and test if-then rules and constraints, and to interpret state-transition graphs (target reachability, stable states, lock-ins).
- Basic knowledge of schistosomiasis transmission and control (snail hosts, water contact, mass drug administration, WASH, behavior).
- Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
- Attention to detail, traceability of every variable and rule to a literature source, and reproducible work.
- Ability to work with experts and incorporate their feedback.

Job Description

- Literature Review & Evidence Extraction: Run structured searches, screen papers, and record variables, relationships, and supporting evidence in a structured dataset.
- Variable & Relationship Development: Classify biological, epidemiological, environmental, and control factors; define thresholds; map interactions between them.
- EDEN Model Development: Convert variables and relationships into EDEN rules, constraints, and transitions; define the initial and target states with the client.
- Testing & Analysis: Run the model, analyses state-transition graphs and variable connectivity and refine the rules iteratively.
- Expert Coordination: Take part in scheduled discussions with parasitologists, epidemiologists, and the research team, and incorporate their input.
- Documentation & Reporting: Document variables, assumptions, rules, and model versions; prepare visualizations, technical summaries, and final handover files.
