Position: Mechanical Design & Development Engineer
Experience: 2–5 years
Employment Type: Full-time
Department: Mechanical Design / Engineering
Location: Mandideep
About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer who can work across 3D mechanical design, machine development, fabrication, assembly, and shop-floor activities.
The ideal candidate should have practical experience in SolidWorks, mechanical assemblies, sheet metal, structural design, weldments, and machine development. The person should be comfortable moving beyond CAD work and working directly with tools, machines, fabrication, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
We are looking for a moderately experienced and technically strong individual, not necessarily a highly senior engineer. Practical knowledge, discipline, ownership, and the ability to convert concepts into working mechanical systems are more key than years of experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop 3D mechanical designs using SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
- Create and modify:
- Mechanical parts
- Assemblies
- Detailed manufacturing drawings
- Sheet-metal components
- Weldments and structural frames
- Machine components and mechanisms
- Prepare 2D drawings, BOMs, assembly drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
- Design components considering manufacturability, assembly, serviceability, and cost.
- Work closely with fabrication, machining, electrical, and assembly teams.
- Participate in prototype development, assembly, testing, and troubleshooting.
- Visit/work on the shop floor and understand how components are actually manufactured and assembled.
- Take hands-on responsibility for mechanical development using appropriate tools, machines, fixtures, and measuring instruments.
- Support modification and improvement of existing machines and mechanical systems.
- Identify design issues during fabrication/assembly and implement suitable engineering solutions.
- Work on SPM (Special Purpose Machine) development and modification activities.
- Coordinate with vendors/fabricators for machining, laser cutting, bending, welding, and other manufacturing processes.
- Maintain proper engineering documentation and revision control.
- Follow safety, quality, and engineering standards.
Required Technical Skills1. 3D CAD / SolidWorks
Strong working knowledge of 3D CAD software,
preferably SolidWorks.
The candidate should be comfortable with:
- Part modelling
- Assembly modelling
- Detailed drawings
- Sheet Metal
- Weldments
- Configurations
- Basic design changes and revisions
- BOM generation
- Basic understanding of design intent and parametric modelling
2. Mechanical Design
Good practical knowledge of:
- Machine components and mechanisms
- Shafts, bearings, fasteners, couplings, brackets, supports, etc.
- Sheet-metal design
- Structural frames
- Welded structures
- Fabricated components
- Machined components
- Material selection
- Basic tolerance concepts
- Fits and clearances
- Manufacturing processes
3. Manufacturing & Shop-Floor Knowledge
The candidate should be hands-on and comfortable working with mechanical operations.
Experience/knowledge in:
- Machining
- Drilling
- Grinding
- Cutting
- Welding/fabrication
- Sheet-metal fabrication
- Assembly
- Hand tools and power tools
- Basic measuring instruments
- Understanding of machining and fabrication limitations
The candidate should understand that a good mechanical design needs to be practical to manufacture, assemble, operate, and maintain.
4. Special Purpose Machines (SPM)
Basic understanding or experience in:
- SPM design
- Machine structures
- Mechanisms
- Fixtures and tooling
- Actuation systems
- Pneumatic/mechanical systems
- Machine assembly and commissioning
Direct SPM experience is preferred but not mandatory if the candidate has strong mechanical design fundamentals.
5. Specialized Design Experience
Experience or exposure in one or more of the following is desirable:
- Industrial machinery
- Sheet-metal products
- Structural/mechanical assemblies
- Aesthetic/industrial product design
- Enclosures and covers
- Defence / Mil-grade equipment
- Ruggedized mechanical systems
- Equipment designed for harsh operating environments
Mil-grade/defence design experience will be an added advantage.
Good to Have
The following skills are not mandatory but will be advantageous:
- Mechanical analysis
- Structural analysis
- Thermal analysis
- Simulation
- FEA
- Heat transfer / thermal management
- Understanding of vibration and load conditions
- Basic knowledge of GD&T;
- Design for Manufacturing (DFM)
- Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Knowledge of engineering materials
- Basic knowledge of pneumatics/hydraulics
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone who is:
- Disciplined and systematic in their approach.
- Practical and hands-on.
- Willing to work both in the design office and on the shop floor.
- Good at understanding mechanical problems and finding practical solutions.
- Able to work independently as well as with a team.
- Willing to learn and take ownership.
- Detail-oriented when preparing drawings and documentation.
- Comfortable with design iterations and prototype development.
- Safety-conscious while working with machines and tools.
Experience
2–5 years of relevant experience in mechanical design, machine design, product development, fabrication, or mechanical engineering.
We are not looking for a highly senior candidate. A candidate with moderate experience and strong practical knowledge of mechanical design + manufacturing + shop-floor operations would be ideal.
Freshers with exceptional hands-on/project experience may also be considered.
Education
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
- Strong practical experience may be considered alongside formal education.
Preferred Candidate
An ideal candidate would be someone who can:
Concept → 3D CAD → Drawing → Fabrication/Machining → Assembly → Testing → Modification
and is comfortable participating in the complete mechanical development cycle.
Key Success Factors
The candidate will be evaluated primarily on:
- SolidWorks / 3D CAD capability
