Satwik Metals Private
Raniganj
Company: Satwik Metals Pvt. Ltd.
Location: Raniganj, West Bengal
Department: Production & Engineering
Experience: 3–7 years preferred
Salary: Negotiable based on technical capability and experience
About the Role
Satwik Metals Pvt. Ltd. is looking for a technically sharp, hands-on Mechanical Supervisor to oversee fabrication operations, troubleshoot machinery, improve production processes, and ensure quality and dimensional accuracy.
We need someone with a strong mechanical aptitude who can do more than supervise workers. The ideal candidate should be able to understand engineering drawings, identify fabrication errors, analyze machine problems, diagnose mechanical faults, and find practical solutions on the shop floor.
This role is suited to someone who enjoys understanding how machines work, solving technical problems, and improving manufacturing efficiency.
Key Responsibilities1. Technical Supervision of Fabrication
- Supervise fabrication processes, including cutting, shearing, marking, welding, drilling, punching, grinding, and painting.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, and technical specifications.
- Ensure components are manufactured to the correct dimensions and tolerances.
- Check alignment, hole positions, weld quality, and dimensional accuracy.
- Identify fabrication errors and implement corrective measures.
- Ensure workers follow the correct fabrication sequence and procedures.
- Minimize material wastage, rework, and production delays.
2. Mechanical Troubleshooting & Machine Analysis
- Inspect fabrication machinery and identify mechanical problems.
- Diagnose issues involving bearings, shafts, belts, gears, motors, alignment, vibration, and other mechanical components.
- Investigate recurring machine breakdowns and identify root causes.
- Coordinate with fitters, welders, and maintenance personnel to carry out repairs.
- Recommend machine adjustments, modifications, and preventive maintenance.
- Assess whether a machine is operating efficiently and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Assist management in evaluating new machinery, tooling, and equipment.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can independently analyze a machine problem and explain what is causing it, rather than simply reporting that the machine is not working.
3. Production Planning & Process Improvement
- Organize daily fabrication activities according to production priorities.
- Allocate jobs to welders, fitters, and machine operators.
- Ensure production follows approved drawings and specifications.
- Monitor output, machine downtime, rejection rates, and rework.
- Identify bottlenecks and improve production methods.
- Develop practical methods to improve productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.
- Ensure correct job sequencing and material availability.
4. Quality Control
- Inspect finished and semi-finished components.
- Check dimensions using measuring instruments such as vernier calipers, measuring tapes, micrometers, and other relevant tools.
- Identify defects in welding, cutting, drilling, punching, and assembly.
- Ensure finished products meet drawing requirements and customer specifications.
- Maintain inspection records and report recurring quality issues.
- Investigate the causes of rejected components and recommend corrective actions.
5. Engineering Drawings & Technical Understanding
- Interpret mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and fabrication details.
- Understand material specifications, sections, plate thicknesses, and component dimensions.
- Calculate basic material requirements and fabrication measurements.
- Identify drawing errors, impractical designs, and potential manufacturing difficulties.
- Communicate technical requirements clearly to workers.
- Suggest practical design or fabrication improvements where appropriate.
6. Maintenance & Equipment Management
- Maintain basic preventive maintenance schedules for fabrication machinery.
- Monitor machine condition and identify early signs of failure.
- Ensure lubrication, alignment, cleaning, and routine maintenance are performed.
- Maintain breakdown and maintenance records.
- Coordinate repairs and spare-parts requirements.
- Identify recurring failures and suggest permanent solutions rather than temporary fixes.
7. Team Management & Shop-Floor Discipline
- Supervise welders, fitters, machine operators, and fabrication workers.
- Ensure workers understand job requirements before production begins.
- Monitor productivity, quality, and adherence to safety procedures.
- Ensure tools, equipment, and materials are used properly.
- Coordinate with stores and management for material and consumable requirements.
Candidate Requirements
Essential:
- Diploma or ITI in Mechanical Engineering, or a relevant mechanical/fabrication qualification.
- Approximately 3–7 years of relevant experience in fabrication, mechanical maintenance, or industrial manufacturing.
- Strong practical understanding of mechanical equipment.
- Ability to read engineering and fabrication drawings.
- Experience supervising fabrication workers.
- Good knowledge of welding, cutting, drilling, punching, and fitting operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems systematically.
- Familiarity with measuring instruments and dimensional inspection.
Preferred:
- Experience in steel fabrication, wire mesh manufacturing, industrial structures, or engineering workshops.
- Experience with shearing machines, punching machines, welding machines, and other fabrication equipment.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance and root-cause analysis.
- Basic knowledge of Excel for production and maintenance records.
- Ability to prepare simple sketches or communicate technical modifications clearly.
We value demonstrated technical ability more than qualifications alone. Candidates who can explain mechanical problems logically and demonstrate practical troubleshooting skills will be preferred.
The Type of Person We Want
We are looking for someone who:
- Has a sharp mechanical and analytical mind.
- Understands how machines work, not just how to operate them.
- Can identify why a machine is producing defective or inconsistent output.
- Can look at an engineering drawing and understand how the component should be manufactured.
- Spots dimensional errors before products reach dispatch.
- Can identify inefficient fabrication processes and suggest improvements.
- Is comfortable working directly on the shop floor.
- Takes ownership of technical problems until they are resolved.
- Can guide workers using technical knowledge rather than relying solely on authority.
This is not a purely administrative supervisory role. We need a hands-on technical problem-solver who can improve the quality and efficiency of our manufacturing operations.
How We Will Evaluate Candidates
To identify technically robust candidates, we will assess practical knowledge during the interview.
Candidates should be prepared to answer questions such as:
- A shearing machine is producing cuts that are consistently out of square. How would you diagnose the problem?
- A punching machine is producing holes with burrs and inconsistent dimensions. What would you inspect?
- A fabricated component matches the drawing dimensions individually, but the assembled structure does not align. What could be causing this?
- A welding operation is producing excessive distortion. What factors would you investigate?
- A machine has started vibrating excessively. How would you identify the cause?
- How would you determine whether a recurring machine breakdown is caused by operator error, poor maintenance, component failure, or an incorrect machine setting?
- If a drawing appears impractical to manufacture using the available machinery, what would you do?
- How would you reduce material wastage and rework in a fabrication workshop?
Candidates should explain their diagnostic process, reasoning, and proposed corrective actions, rather than simply naming possible faults.
