Role Summary
Avanade India’s Applications & Engineering practice is looking for an Application Architect to own the architecture of the custom applications we build for clients. This is a hands-on architect role — the person in it sets the target architecture, proves it in code, and stays close enough to the build to be accountable for whether it works.
You will architect microservices and cloud-native applications on Azure, lead modernisation of monolithic and legacy .NET estates, and set the engineering and Dev Ops standards the delivery teams work to. You will also lead a team directly — guiding engineers and technical leads through build and release — and act as the design authority with client architects and review boards. We expect fluency with LLM-based development tools such as Git Hub Copilot and Claude Code, and a transparent view of how to use them well on client code.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the application architecture on client engagements — target-state architecture, service boundaries, integration patterns, non-functional requirements and architecture decision records.
- Architect microservices-based applications: domain-driven service decomposition, API design and versioning, synchronous and asynchronous communication, messaging and events, resilience, idempotency and distributed data patterns.
- Lead monolith-to-microservices modernisation — assessing the existing estate, identifying seams and bounded contexts, sequencing the decomposition (strangler-fig and similar patterns), and managing data separation and cutover without breaking the business.
- Design cloud-native applications on Azure — containers and AKS, App Service, Azure Functions and serverless, API Management, Service Bus and Event Grid, caching, storage, scalability, observability and cost-aware design.
- Lead migration of .NET Framework applications to .NET Core / modern .NET — assessment, dependency analysis, refactoring approach, phased cutover and regression strategy.
- Stay hands-on: build reference implementations, prototypes and the hard parts of the codebase in C# and .NET, and review the team’s code.
- Lead a team of engineers and technical leads through delivery — technical direction, work allocation, code and design review, and accountability for technical quality.
- Define and enforce engineering standards:
branching and code review discipline, test strategy and coverage, static analysis, secure coding and performance benchmarks.
- Own the CI/CD and Dev Ops approach with the delivery team — multi-stage YAML pipelines in Azure Dev Ops, environments, approval gates, release automation, infrastructure as code and continuous delivery.
- Set the standard for LLM-assisted development (Git Hub Copilot, Claude Code or equivalent) — where it is used, how output is reviewed, and the guardrails that apply on client code — and use it hands-on to accelerate design, refactoring, test generation and legacy code comprehension.
- Design application security into the solution — authentication and authorisation (Entra ID, OAuth/OIDC), secrets management, data protection and secure integration — working with security teams on review and sign-off.
- Design for operability — monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting, SLOs, DR and production support handover.
- Act as design authority — chairing design reviews, resolving architecture escalations and defending decisions with client architects and architecture review boards.
- Plan and estimate technical work with project managers, assess technical risk and dependencies, and keep delivery honest about trade-offs.
- Mentor technical leads and engineers, and drive skilling on .NET, cloud-native engineering and AI-assisted development.
- Support presales as the applications SME — solution architecture, modernisation approach, estimation, proposals and client technical workshops.
- Contribute reference architectures, reusable frameworks, pipeline templates and accelerators to the practice IP library.
