Geologist Sediment & Reservoir Studies
Experience: 2-4 Years
Employment Type: Full-time / In-house
Function: Geology / Technical Research / Dredging & Desilting Projects
Role Overview The candidate will be responsible for studying sediment characteristics, rocks, soils, river systems, geological formations and grain-size distribution to assess the nature, quality and commercial potential of sediments found in reservoirs, rivers and other water bodies.
The role will involve a combination of *technical research, field visits, sample analysis, geological interpretation and coordination with laboratories, survey agencies and technical consultants.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and review sediment studies for reservoirs, rivers, dams and other water bodies.
- Analyse sediment composition to determine the proportion of sand, silt, clay, gravel and other materials.
- Conduct/review sieve analysis and grain-size distribution analysis of sediment and sand samples.
- Interpret laboratory results and classify sediments based on particle size, texture, colour, mineral composition and physical characteristics.
- Study the geology, lithology, rock formations and soil profile of river basins and reservoir catchments.
- Evaluate how the surrounding rock type and geology influence the quality and characteristics of river sand.
- Study the geography, geomorphology and drainage characteristics of rivers and river basins.
- Develop an understanding of major rivers, reservoirs, dams, basins and water bodies across India.
- Assess the potential source and movement of sediments within a river or reservoir system.
- Review historical and available sedimentation, reservoir capacity and catchment-area studies.
- Support identification of suitable locations for dredging/desilting and sediment extraction.
- Assist in designing sediment sampling plans, including sample locations, depths, frequency and testing requirements.
- Participate in field visits for geological reconnaissance, sediment sampling and site assessment.
- Coordinate with laboratories for testing of sediment, sand and soil samples.
- Review and interpret soil investigation, geological, hydrological, bathymetric and sediment survey reports.
- Prepare technical notes, comparative assessments, maps, presentations and reports for management.
- Maintain geological and sediment databases for various river basins, reservoirs and project sites across India.
- Work with surveyors, hydrologists, dredging specialists, environmental consultants and government authorities on technical project requirements.
Technical Knowledge Required The candidate should have a strong understanding of:
- Sedimentology
- Sediment characterisation
- Sieve analysis
- Grain-size distribution
- Sand, silt, clay and gravel classification
- Soil classification
- Petrology and rock identification
- Lithology and geological formations
- River geomorphology
- Fluvial processes and sediment transport
- River basin and catchment geology
- Reservoir sedimentation
- Alluvial deposits
- Sand provenance and mineral composition
- Indian river systems and drainage basins
- Dams, reservoirs and major water bodies in India
- Geological maps and topographical maps
- Sediment sampling and laboratory testing methodology
Preferred Additional Skills
- Working knowledge of GIS tools such as QGIS or ArcGIS.
- Ability to interpret geological, drainage, watershed and satellite maps.
- Understanding of bathymetric surveys, hydrographic surveys and reservoir capacity surveys.
- Basic knowledge of hydrology and watershed management.
- Knowledge of river sand, M-sand and construction aggregate specifications would be an advantage.
- Familiarity with IS standards or other recognised standards relating to soil, aggregate and particle-size testing.
- Exposure to dredging, mining, infrastructure, irrigation, water-resource or reservoir projects would be preferred.
- Ability to assess the commercial suitability of recovered sand and sediment for construction and other applications.
Qualification
- M.Sc. in Geology / Applied Geology / Earth Sciences, or equivalent qualification.
- Candidates with a background in Engineering Geology, Sedimentology, Geomorphology or related disciplines will be preferred.
- 2-4 years of relevant qualified experience in geology, sediment studies, soil investigation, mining, dredging, river studies, infrastructure or water-resource projects.
Candidate Profile The ideal candidate should:
- Have strong analytical and technical research skills.
- Be comfortable working with geological and laboratory data.
- Be willing to undertake frequent project-site visits across India.
- Have strong report-writing and presentation skills.
- Be able to independently analyse technical information and provide clear recommendations.
- Have a practical, field-oriented approach and an interest in river systems, reservoirs, sediments and dredging/desilting projects.
