BOM Costing Engineer (Lighting & Custom Projects)

About the Role

Unilights is seeking a Fresher Product Costing Engineer to own the complete costing and pricing process for our customized lighting projects. This role is responsible for converting product designs, drawings, and specifications into accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), determining true manufacturing costs, and ensuring commercially viable pricing.

The ideal candidate combines the analytical rigor of a Cost & Management Accountant (CMA) with the technical understanding of a Mechanical Engineer. They should be capable of evaluating every component, manufacturing process, finish, assembly operation, packaging element, and procurement cost involved in creating bespoke lighting products.

This is a critical profit-protection role that directly impacts the company's margins, pricing accuracy, and project success.

Key Responsibilities

Product Costing & BOM Management

Prepare, review, and validate detailed BOMs for custom and standard lighting products.

Analyze costs associated with raw materials, electrical components, fabrication, finishing, assembly, packaging, logistics, and installation requirements.

Ensure complete cost coverage with zero omissions.

Create standardized costing methodologies across product categories.

Pricing & Commercial Analysis

Calculate project-wise product costing and recommend selling prices.

Determine target margins and profitability for each project.

Support the sales team with accurate commercial quotations.

Conduct margin analysis and profitability reviews.

Engineering Cost Evaluation





Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and product designs.

Understand manufacturing processes including:

Metal fabrication

Machining

Welding

Casting

Powder coating

Electroplating

Polishing

Electrical assembly

Packaging and dispatch

Evaluate manufacturing feasibility and associated costs.

Vendor & Procurement Cost Management

Obtain and compare supplier quotations.

Maintain a database of material and process costs.

Identify alternative sourcing opportunities and cost optimization initiatives.

Monitor fluctuations in material pricing and assess impact on product costs.

Cost Optimization

Identify opportunities to improve product profitability.

Recommend design and process modifications that reduce cost without affecting aesthetics or quality.

Work closely with Design, Procurement, Production, and Sales teams to improve cost efficiency.

Reporting & Controls

Develop and maintain costing dashboards and reports.

Track estimated versus actual costs.

Monitor project profitability and highlight deviations.

Establish costing controls and approval mechanisms.

Required Qualifications

Education

Mechanical Engineering Degree/Diploma, OR

CMA (Cost & Management Accountant), OR

Combination of Mechanical Engineering and Cost Accounting background preferred.

Experience

Fresher in product costing, manufacturing costing, estimation, BOM management, or commercial engineering.

Experience in lighting, furniture, interiors, metal products, engineering products, fabrication, or custom manufacturing preferred.
