Data Engineer
Job Type: Contract
Location: Remote (India)
We are seeking a skilled and hands-on Data Engineer for a contract engagement to build, maintain, and support our enterprise data platform within Microsoft Azure. In this role, you will work closely with Data Architects and technical leadership to construct robust, governed, and scalable data solutions.
Your core responsibilities will focus on T-SQL database development, pipeline orchestration using Azure Data Factory (ADF), building Kimball-style dimensional models, and providing production support to ensure seamless data flows for analytics and downstream business operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Database Development & Engineering: Design, build, test, and optimize Azure SQL Database artifacts—including complex queries, stored procedures, views, user-defined functions, indexes, and execution plans.
- Pipeline Orchestration & ETL/ELT: Architect, deploy, schedule, and monitor end-to-end Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines to ingest, transform, and move multi-source data efficiently into enterprise repositories.
- Data Warehousing & Modeling: Apply Kimball dimensional modeling principles to design, implement, and support star schemas, fact tables, dimension tables, and surrogate key management.
- Production Support & Incident Management: Serve as a key point of contact for platform support by troubleshooting pipeline failures, database performance bottlenecks, and data discrepancies. Conduct root-cause analysis and deploy permanent fixes to improve reliability.
- Data Quality & Governance: Deliver reliable, auditable, and secure datasets for business intelligence and reporting while adhering to corporate data governance policies.
- Technical Documentation & Collaboration:
Create detailed source-to-target mappings, system diagrams, runbooks, and operational guides. Partner with cross-functional stakeholders and team members to refine data requirements and technical specifications.
- Quality Assurance & Standards: Participate in peer code reviews, deployment verification, unit testing, and continuous delivery improvements across release cycles.
- Operational Readiness: Support maintenance activities, release deployments, and system upgrades, including providing off-hours incident support when required.
Key Skills & Technical Competencies
- Advanced SQL & Database Tuning: Expertise in T-SQL development, indexing strategies, execution plan evaluation, and Azure SQL Database administration fundamentals.
- Azure Integration Services: Proficiency with Azure Data Factory features, including pipeline parameterization, triggers, self-hosted and Azure integration runtimes, and monitoring tools.
- Data Architecture Concepts: Strong grasp of Kimball methodology, star schema architecture, incremental loading strategies, error handling, and audit logging patterns.
- Ecosystem Familiarity: Working awareness of Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI integration.
Required Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years of hands-on professional experience in data engineering, SQL database development, or business intelligence engineering.
- Azure Data Platform: Demonstrated background building and maintaining solutions on Azure SQL Database and Azure Data Factory.
- ETL/ELT Workflows: Proven experience integrating complex, disparate data sources through robust ETL/ELT frameworks.
- Data Warehousing: Solid understanding of enterprise data warehousing methodologies and dimensional modeling.
- Support Capabilities: Practical experience maintaining production environments, conducting incident triage, and resolving technical escalations.
- Communication: Explicit verbal and written English communication skills to interact smoothly with distributed, cross-functional teams.
Preferred Qualifications & Certifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
- Certifications: Microsoft Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Data Engineer Associate / DP-203) or related accreditations in Microsoft Fabric and Power BI are highly advantageous.
- Tooling Exposure: Direct experience with Microsoft Fabric (Lakehouses, Warehouses), source-control workflows (Git/Azure DevOps), and supporting Power BI semantic models.
Work Environment & Remote Capabilities
- Setup: 100% remote position based in India; requires a quiet workspace equipped with high-speed internet and reliable workstation hardware.
- Operational Readiness: Ability to spend extended periods using multi-monitor workstations for code development, documentation, and operational monitoring.
- Team Engagement: Active participation in video and audio conferences for standups, technical design sessions, and collaborative planning.
