1. Competitive Intelligence & Market Benchmarking
- Competitor Tear-downs: Track competitor OE pricing strategies, component specifications, manufacturing locations, and raw material cost structures.
- Share of Wallet (SoW) Tracking: Continuously analyze how much volume a vehicle manufacturer (e.g., Tata, Maruti, Volvo) is sourcing from your company versus rival component makers.
- Tech Trend Mapping: Monitor alternative technological developments by competitors (e.g., light-weighting materials or EV-specific components) to prevent your product lineup from becoming obsolete.
1. Business Acquisition & "Conquest" Sales
- RFQ (Request for Proposal) Management: Lead cross-functional engineering and finance teams to submit winning bids for current vehicle platforms, intentionally targeting programs currently held by competitors.
- Value Engineering Pitches: Build data-backed technical pitches to prove to auto manufacturers that replacing a competitor's part with yours will increase fuel efficiency, reduce weight, or lower structural warranty claims.
- Contract Negotiations: Navigate multi-year price-down agreements (annual price reduction demands from OEMs) while keeping margins higher than the market average.
1. Defensive Account Retention
- Lock-in Strategies: Build deep relationships with the automaker's R&D;, Quality,
and Procurement heads to ensure your components are hard-coded into early-stage vehicle blueprints.
- Early Warning Tracking: Monitor shifts in the OEM's sentiment or localized supply chain audits to catch signs that they are testing or onboarding a secondary competitor OE supplier.
- Supply Chain Security: Coordinate production schedules to ensure 100% On-Time In-Full (OTIF) delivery, as any line-stoppage gives immediate leverage to competitor backup suppliers.
1. Commercial & Lifecycle Management
- Tooling & Asset Management: Negotiate who pays for the production tooling, molds, and capital equipment required to build parts for a specific vehicle platform.
- Engineering Change Requests (ECR): Manage pricing adjustments when automakers alter part designs mid-lifecycle, ensuring changes don't allow competitors to undercut the account.
1. Cross-Functional Coordination
- R&D; Alignment: Funnel intelligence back to internal engineering teams detailing exactly where rival products have superior performance metrics so internal teams can counter-develop.
- Quality Control Liaison: Work closely with plant quality engineers to resolve any defect issues before the vehicle manufacturer uses it as a reason to diversify their supplier base
