- Project Overview

I am seeking a highly skilled and experienced mobile application developer to build a professional GPS-based mobile application from the ground up.

I am looking for a developer who can take ownership of the technical development process, recommend the most appropriate technologies, build a reliable and scalable application, and deliver a thoroughly tested product ready for launch.

The developer must have strong experience in mobile application development, GPS and location-based services, mapping technologies, backend development and API integrations.

This is a serious development project. I am looking for someone who can communicate professionally, understand requirements, identify potential technical challenges and deliver high-quality work independently.

The selected candidate must be comfortable communicating directly with an English-speaking client in Australia.

- Essential English Communication Requirements

Excellent English communication is mandatory for this position.

Applicants must demonstrate clear, professional and fluent English-speaking and writing capabilities.

The successful candidate must be able to:

- Speak English clearly and confidently during video meetings.
- Explain technical concepts, development decisions and potential problems in understandable English.

- Design and develop a high-quality mobile application for iOS and Android.
- Recommend a suitable application architecture and technology stack.
- Develop a clean, responsive and professional user interface.
- Implement navigation between application screens and required user workflows.
- Ensure compatibility across supported devices and operating system versions.
- Optimise performance, reliability and maintainability.
- Implement appropriate error handling and loading states.

GPS and Location-Based Functionality
- Integrate GPS and device-location services.
- Implement accurate location acquisition and updates.
- Develop real-time location tracking where required.
- Implement background location tracking when the application requires it and the operating system permits it.
- Handle location permissions, denied permissions and changes to device settings.
- Manage location updates when the application is in the foreground, background or suspended state, subject to platform limitations.
- Optimise GPS polling, battery consumption and location-update frequency.
- Handle weak GPS signals, network interruptions and temporary loss of connectivity.
- Implement location history and tracking data storage if required.
- Support geofencing, location alerts or other location-triggered functionality if required by the approved specification.

Mapping and Navigation
- Integrate an appropriate mapping SDK, such as Google Maps or Mapbox.
- Display interactive maps and location markers.
- Implement route calculation, directions or navigation if required.
- Handle map loading, location changes and route updates.
- Recommend suitable mapping services based on technical requirements, coverage, cost and licensing.
- Explain any additional usage-based API fees before implementation.

Backend and Database Development
- Design and implement the backend infrastructure required by the application.

- Avoid exposing API keys, passwords or credentials in public source code.

Testing and Quality Assurance
- Test the application on physical iOS and Android devices.

GPS and mapping

- Practical experience with GPS, geolocation or location-based mobile applications.
- Experience with Google Maps SDK, Mapbox or comparable mapping technology.
- Understanding of location permissions, accuracy, background execution and battery optimisation.
- Experience with real-time tracking is highly desirable.

Backend development

- REST API development and integration.
- Database design and data management.
- Authentication and authorisation.
- Cloud deployment and environment configuration.
- Real-time communication or event-driven systems when required.

Development workflow

- Git and version control.
