About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Associate – Mainframe Modernization with strong hands-on expertise in IBM Mainframe technologies and proven experience leading complex modernization initiatives.

The role will be responsible for providing technical leadership, solution design, modernization strategy, and delivery guidance for large-scale Mainframe applications involving COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, and related technologies.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of legacy Mainframe applications and the ability to translate complex business and technical requirements into modern, scalable target solutions . The candidate will work closely with architects, engineering teams, business stakeholders, and client teams to define modernization approaches, resolve technical challenges, and ensure successful delivery.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead technical delivery and modernization activities for large-scale Mainframe applications and systems .
- Analyze complex Mainframe applications involving COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, IMS , and associated interfaces to understand application architecture, business logic, data flows, dependencies, and integration points.
- Define and recommend appropriate modernization strategies such as rehost, refactor, replatform, rearchitect, or rebuild , based on application complexity, business requirements, cost, risk, and technical feasibility.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership to Mainframe and distributed technology teams throughout the modernization lifecycle.
- Define target-state application architecture and modernization patterns for batch, online/transactional, database, and integration workloads .
- Lead technical analysis and decomposition of large COBOL applications into services, APIs, batch processes, or other modern application components where appropriate.
- Provide technical guidance for modernization of Mainframe DB2, batch processing, CICS transactions, files, interfaces, and dependent applications .
- Review and validate solution designs, technical specifications, application flows, data flows, interface designs, and modernization artifacts.
- Identify technical dependencies,



risks, performance bottlenecks, and architectural gaps and drive appropriate resolutions.
- Work closely with DB2, Mainframe, Java/Python, API, cloud, DevOps, and data teams to ensure end-to-end technical alignment.
- Lead technical workshops and discussions with client stakeholders to understand existing systems and define modernization solutions.
- Establish and enforce technical standards, design principles, coding practices, and modernization patterns across teams.
- Mentor Senior Developers, Technical Leads, and Mainframe engineers and provide guidance on complex technical issues.
- Support estimation, technical planning, sprint planning, dependency management, and delivery governance for modernization initiatives.
- Evaluate modernization tools and technologies and recommend appropriate solutions based on project requirements.
- Contribute to automation and GenAI-assisted Mainframe modernization initiatives where applicable, including application analysis, business-rule extraction, dependency analysis, code transformation, and modernization documentation.

Required Skills & Experience

- 7 to 12 years of experience in Mainframe application development, technical leadership, solution design, or modernization.
- Strong hands-on expertise in:
- COBOL
- JCL
- DB2 for z/OS
- CICS
- VSAM
- Batch processing
- Mainframe utilities and production support concepts
- Proven experience leading large-scale Mainframe modernization or migration programs .
- Strong understanding of complex COBOL application architecture, including:
- Program dependencies
- Copybooks
- DB2 access
- CICS transactions
- Batch processing
- File processing
- MQ/interfaces
- Inter-program communication
- Scheduling and job dependencies
- Robust DB2 expertise , including SQL development,



performance tuning, database design, stored procedures, and understanding of Mainframe DB2 integration patterns.
- Experience analyzing and decomposing large legacy applications and converting business logic into modern application/service architectures .
- Experience with modernization patterns such as rehost, replatform, refactor, rearchitect, and rewrite .
- Experience working with distributed technologies such as Java/Spring Boot, Python, REST APIs, messaging, or similar technologies .
- Strong understanding of API and integration architecture and the interaction between Mainframe and distributed platforms.
- Ability to independently analyze complex technical problems and provide practical, implementable solutions .
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work with both technical teams and senior client stakeholders .

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in banking, financial services, insurance, healthcare, or other large enterprise environments .
- Experience working on modernization programs involving millions of lines of COBOL code .
- Experience with Mainframe DB2 modernization , including stored procedures, SQL transformation, database access modernization, and data migration strategies.
- Experience with IBM z/OS Connect, Micro Focus, Raincode, AWS Mainframe Modernization, or similar modernization platforms .
- Experience with Java/Spring Boot, Python, REST APIs, Kafka/MQ, containers, Kubernetes, or cloud platforms .
- Understanding of Azure, AWS, or GCP architecture and integration patterns.
- Experience with DevOps, CI/CD, Git, automated testing, and Agile/Scrum delivery .
- Experience leading cross-functional teams across Mainframe and distributed technologies .
- Experience with GenAI-assisted code analysis, code transformation, application discovery, or automated modernization is a plus.
- Familiarity with Mainframe development and analysis tools such as File-Aid, Abend-AID, ChangeMan, BMC utilities, IBM utilities, and similar tools .
- TOGAF, AWS/Azure architecture, or other relevant architecture certifications are a plus
