Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Quality & Production Engineering Trainee to join our steel pipe manufacturing team. This role is designed for recent engineering graduates looking to gain hands-on operational and technical experience in the production of high-quality welded (ERW, LSAW, SSAW) and/or seamless steel pipes.
As a trainee, you will rotate across production floors and quality control labs, collaborating closely with experienced engineers to monitor manufacturing processes, ensure compliance with international manufacturing standards (such as API, ISO, ASTM), and optimize output efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Production Operations
- Monitor step-by-step pipe manufacturing processes, including raw material handling, pipe forming, welding, heat treatment, sizing, and finishing.
- Assist production line supervisors in tracking daily yield, machine uptime, shift schedules, and cycle times.
- Participate in bottleneck analysis and support continuous improvement projects (Kaizen, 5S, Lean Manufacturing).
- Learn operational protocols for heavy machinery, hydrostatic test benches, and pipe threading operations.
Quality Assurance & Control
- Inspect incoming raw materials (steel coils, plates, billets) and verify material test certificates (MTCs).
- Assist with dimensional checks, visual inspections, and mechanical testing (tensile, hardness, impact testing).
- Gain hands-on exposure to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods such as Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), and Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI).
- Help maintain quality logs, record non-conformance reports (NCRs), and participate in root cause analysis (RCA) for defect resolution.
Process & Safety Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) standards and plant safety rules.
- Help verify that pipe manufacturing meets customer specifications and code standards (API 5L, ASTM, ISO).
- Prepare routine production reports, shift summaries, and quality audit documentation.
Key Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelors Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Production Engineering, or Industrial Engineering.
- Experience: Fresh graduate or up to 1 year of experience in a heavy manufacturing or metallurgical environment.
- Technical Knowledge: Basic understanding of steel metallurgy, welding processes (ERW, SAW), material testing, and manufacturing fundamentals.
- Soft Skills:
- Robust analytical and problem-solving mindset.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in shift rotations on a factory floor.
- Tools: Basic proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); familiarity with AutoCAD or ERP systems (SAP/Oracle) is a plus.
