Design Engineer – Product Development
Company: Taark Electric Vehicles & Equipments Pvt Ltd | Location: Coimbatore (on-site, plant-based) | Reports to: Head - NPD / Founder & Director | Type: Full-time
About TAARK
TAARK designs and manufactures battery-operated in-campus material-handling vehicles (load carriers, tippers, forklifts, brick-transport EVs, customised application vehicles) and on-road L5 commercial EVs under the TAARK_GLADIA brand. Our customers are brick kilns, textile mills, cement, agro, poultry, institutions and hospitals — environments where reliability and serviceability decide whether a vehicle earns its keep.
Role summary
Own the design of TAARK vehicles and sub-systems from concept to production release. You will convert application requirements into manufacturable, serviceable, cost-optimised designs, integrate chassis, drivetrain, battery, controls and body into a working vehicle, and maintain design data and change control with discipline. This is a hands-on, shop-floor-connected role -not a drawing-office job.
Key responsibilities
1. Product development
- Convert customer/application requirements into design specifications, concepts and detailed designs for new vehicles, variants and attachments.
- Perform load, structural and basic FEA checks on chassis, frames, tipping mechanisms and mounts; define factors of safety and validate against test results.
- Drive DFM/DFA, standardisation and modular design so variants share platforms, parts and tooling.
- Own prototype builds with production and R&D; lead design validation, field-trial feedback and corrective redesign.
- Cost every design: target cost, BOM cost tracking, value engineering.
2. 3D modelling
- Build full vehicle and sub-assembly models (chassis, body, battery pack layout, cabin, hydraulics, wiring routing) with proper assembly structure, constraints and mass properties.
- Maintain top-down skeleton models for platforms so variants derive cleanly.
- Run interference, clearance,
ergonomic and service-access checks in CAD before hardware is cut.
3. 2D engineering drawings
- Release production-ready drawings: GD&T;, tolerances, weld symbols, surface finish, material and heat-treatment callouts per IS/ISO standards.
- Prepare fabrication, machining, sheet-metal (with flat patterns/bend tables), weldment and assembly drawings that a vendor can quote and build without phone calls.
- Prepare BOMs, cut-lists and assembly sequence documents for production.
4. Product data management
- Own part numbering, revision control, drawing register, BOM structure (EBOM → MBOM) and CAD data organisation.
- Maintain a single source of truth for released designs; ensure traceability from drawing to vehicle serial number.
- Set up and administer the PDM/vault system (or a disciplined file-based system until then).
5. Engineering change management
- Run the ECR/ECN process end to end: impact assessment (cost, stock, tooling, vehicles in field, service parts), cross-functional sign-off, effectivity and cut-in planning, obsolescence handling.
- Ensure every change is closed with updated drawings, BOM, SOPs and supplier notification — no informal changes on the floor.
- Maintain change history and lessons-learned register.
6. Vehicle integration
- Package and integrate motor, controller, battery pack, BMS, charger, wiring harness, hydraulics, braking, steering and body on the chassis with correct weight distribution, CG, ground clearance and thermal/cable-routing considerations.
- Coordinate mechanical–electrical interfaces with the electrical/controls team; define mounting, connector and harness-routing standards.
- Support homologation/certification documentation for L5 vehicles (ARAI/ICAT-related inputs) and safety compliance for in-campus vehicles.
- Support production during first builds and resolve fitment/assembly issues at the line.
KPIs
- Recent product/variant release on time against NPD plan
- Drawing first-time-right rate (production/vendor queries per drawing release)
- ECN turnaround time and closure rate
- BOM accuracy and data-vault compliance
- Design-related field failures and warranty cost per vehicle
- Cost reduction delivered through VA/VE and standardisation
Requirements
- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering.
- 3–7 years in product design of vehicles, material-handling equipment, off-highway machinery or industrial equipment. EV / fabricated-structure experience strongly preferred.
- Expert in SolidWorks (or Creo/CATIA/Inventor) — large assemblies, sheet metal, weldments, drawings. Working knowledge of AutoCAD and a PDM tool.
- Sound grasp of GD&T;, materials, welding, sheet-metal and machining processes; must be comfortable on the shop floor with fabricators.
- Basic FEA (SolidWorks Simulation/ANSYS) and hydraulic/electrical schematic reading.
- Experience with a structured ECN process and BOM management.
- Working knowledge of CMVR/AIS standards for L5 is an advantage.
- Ownership mindset: finishes what is started, documents properly, takes accountability for design outcomes in the field.
What we offer
- Direct exposure to the founder and full ownership of products, not just drawings.
- Opportunity to build TAARK’s design standards, PDM system and platform architecture from the ground up.
- CTC: ₹2-3 LPA based on experience.
