Role Overview The Composite Technician will be responsible for the fabrication, finishing, assembly and inspection of composite components , primarily using hand layup processes .
The role involves converting engineering drawings, ply schedules and moulds into high-quality composite components with consistent workmanship and dimensional accuracy.
This is a highly hands-on role suited for someone who enjoys working with carbon fibre, glass fibre, epoxy systems, moulds and workshop tools .
Key ResponsibilitiesComposite Fabrication
- Manufacture composite components using hand layup techniques .
- Work with carbon fibre, glass fibre and epoxy resin systems .
- Prepare reinforcement fabrics according to the required ply orientation, sequence and dimensions .
- Cut, position and laminate composite plies accurately as per drawings and ply schedules.
- Prepare and mix resin/hardener systems according to specified ratios.
- Ensure proper wet-out of fibres and minimise defects during layup.
- Manufacture composite panels, shells, fairings, covers, enclosures, structural members and other vehicle components.
- Work with foam/honeycomb core materials for sandwich structures where required.
- Maintain consistent laminate thickness and fibre orientation.
Vacuum Bagging & Curing
- Prepare components for vacuum bagging after hand layup.
- Apply peel ply, breather, release film and vacuum bagging materials.
- Set up vacuum lines and check vacuum integrity.
- Identify and rectify vacuum leaks before curing.
- Follow specified curing cycles and procedures.
- Safely handle and store composite materials
- Trim cured composite components to required dimensions.
- Perform drilling, sanding, grinding and surface preparation.
- Carry out secondary bonding of composite components.
- Install inserts, brackets, fasteners and other hardware.
- Prepare bonding surfaces and apply structural adhesives correctly.
- Maintain required surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
Quality Inspection
- Perform visual and dimensional inspection of composite parts.
- Identify defects such as:
- Dry spots
- Air voids
- Resin-rich areas
- Fibre waviness
- Delamination
- Cracks
- Poor bonding
- Incorrect fibre orientation
- Surface imperfections
- Measure component dimensions and laminate thickness.
- Maintain fabrication and inspection records.
- Carry out rework and repair of composite components when required.
- Ensure components meet engineering drawings and manufacturing requirements.
Tooling & Mould Preparation
- Prepare moulds before fabrication.
- Clean and apply appropriate mould-release systems.
- Handle moulds carefully to maintain dimensional accuracy and surface quality.
- Assist engineers in developing and modifying simple jigs, fixtures and moulds.
- Maintain composite tooling and workshop equipment.
Prototype & Production Support
- Support fabrication of prototype and production components.
- Work closely with mechanical engineers to resolve manufacturing issues.
- Provide practical feedback on manufacturability and fabrication processes.
- Support assembly and integration of composite structures into UAV and underwater vehicle platforms.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe composite fabrication workspace.
