About NITS Engineering

NITS Engineeringis a biomedical technology company building the next generation of biomedical devices, in vitro disease models, and engineering systems for drug discovery, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics. We combine precision hardware engineering with biomedical research to build the tools that take science from the lab bench to real world application.

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Cardiac Tissue Engineering & 3D Bioprinting Researcher to lead the development of engineered cardiac tissue constructs using biomaterials, tissue engineering, and advanced 3D biofabrication.

You will be responsible for translating iPSC-derived cardiac cells into structured, functional 3D cardiac tissue constructs. The role spans biomaterial and bioink development, cell–material interactions, 3D bioprinting, tissue organization, maturation, and long-term construct performance.

The successful candidate will take tissue constructs from biological and engineering concepts through material selection, bioink development, fabrication, optimization, characterization, and functional validation. This work will be carried out in collaboration with CenFab at Vellore Institute of Technology-Vellore.

What You Will Do

- Design and develop 3D engineered cardiac tissue constructs using iPSC-derived cardiac cells.
- Develop and optimize biomaterial and hydrogel systems for cardiac tissue engineering.
- Formulate and characterize cell-compatible bioinks suitable for cardiac tissue fabrication.
- Evaluate bioink rheology, viscosity, gelation, printability, mechanical properties, and cell compatibility.
- Develop and optimize extrusion-based and other relevant 3D bioprinting strategies.
- Optimize printing parameters including extrusion pressure, nozzle geometry, printing speed, resolution, deposition pattern, and cell density.
- Develop strategies for maintaining high cell viability during and following bioprinting.
- Design tissue architectures that promote cellular organization, alignment, maturation, and functional development.
- Investigate cell–material interactions and their influence on cardiac tissue phenotype.
- Develop approaches for improving long-term tissue viability, maturation, and functionality.
- Investigate hypoxic culture, oxygen gradients, and oxygen-controlled tissue-engineering strategies where relevant to cardiac tissue development.

- Develop strategies addressing oxygen and nutrient transport within 3D cardiac constructs.
- Investigate approaches for improving tissue vascularization or perfusion where required.
- Perform structural, mechanical, biological, and cellular characterization of engineered cardiac tissues.
- Analyse tissue architecture, cellular alignment, viability, matrix organization, and construct integrity using appropriate imaging and quantitative methods.
- Work closely with the iPSC researcher to define cell requirements, differentiation stage, cell density, and biological conditions for tissue fabrication.
- Work with molecular and functional characterization researchers to establish criteria for tissue maturation and functionality.
- Independently design experiments, analyse results, troubleshoot technical problems, and iterate the tissue-engineering process.
- Develop reproducible cardiac tissue fabrication SOPs and workflows.
- Maintain detailed records of biomaterial batches, bioink formulations, printing parameters, construct fabrication, and experimental outcomes.
- Contribute to publications, grant proposals, intellectual property, project reports, and technical documentation.
- Mentor junior researchers in tissue engineering, biomaterials, and 3D bioprinting.

What We Are Looking For

- PhD in Tissue Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials, Biotechnology, or a closely related discipline.
- 3–5 years of relevant experience in tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, 3D bioprinting, biofabrication, or related research.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience in 3D bioprinting and/or fabrication of living tissue constructs.
- Strong experience with biomaterials, hydrogels, and tissue-engineering systems.
- Strong understanding of cell–material interactions and 3D tissue development.
- Experience with bioink formulation and characterization.
- Strong understanding of rheology, printability, crosslinking, and mechanical properties of biomaterial systems.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture and incorporation of cells into biomaterial systems.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, execute, troubleshoot,

and optimize tissue-engineering experiments.
- Strong understanding of tissue maturation and regenerative-medicine principles.
- Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- PhD graduates and postdoctoral researchers with research experience in the US, UK, Australia, or Europe will be highly preferred.

Nice to Have

- Previous experience with cardiac tissue engineering or cardiac 3D bioprinting.
- Experience with iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes.
- Experience developing engineered heart tissue or cardiac organoids.
- Experience with hypoxia, oxygen-controlled culture, hypoxic chambers, or oxygen-gradient systems.
- Experience with vascularization, perfusion, or oxygen/nutrient transport in engineered tissues.
- Experience with tissue maturation and cellular alignment strategies.
- Experience with multimaterial or multi-nozzle 3D bioprinting.
- Experience with extrusion-based bioprinting.
- Experience with bioprinter development, process optimization, or automation.
- Experience with mechanical characterization of soft tissues and hydrogels.
- Experience with confocal microscopy and quantitative image analysis.
- Experience with long-term 3D cell culture and tissue viability assessment.
- Experience translating tissue-engineering concepts into reproducible fabrication workflows.

Why Join

- Lead the development of engineered human cardiac tissue constructs
- Work at the intersection of stem-cell biology, regenerative medicine, biomaterials, and 3D bioprinting.
- Own the tissue-engineering process from material selection and bioink development through fabrication and functional validation.
- Work with human iPSC-derived cardiac cells and advanced biofabrication systems.
- Investigate challenging problems including tissue maturation, cellular organization, oxygen transport, hypoxia, and long-term tissue viability.
- Access to in-house 3D bioprinting, rapid prototyping, and biomedical engineering infrastructure.
- Work closely with researchers in stem-cell biology, molecular characterization, engineering, and regulatory science.
- Opportunity to develop physiologically relevant human cardiac tissue models for disease modelling, drug discovery, toxicity assessment, and regenerative medicine.

If you are interested in building functional tissues rather than simply printing structures, this role offers the opportunity to solve the biological and engineering problems required to turn living cells into reproducible human tissue models
