2D Game Artist – Characters, Environments & UI (Remote)
Job Type: Full-Time | 24-Month Contract
Location: Remote
Experience: Senior Level
Industry: Educational Games / HTML5 Games
About the Project
We are developing a premium 2D educational adventure game for children, combining beautiful visual storytelling with clean, intuitive gameplay.
Our game features 20+ themed environments, expressive characters, interactive elements, and custom game interfaces.
We are looking for a talented Senior 2D Game Artist who can take ownership of the game's visual identity—from initial sketches and concept development to polished, production-ready game assets.
This is a long-term opportunity for an artist who enjoys creating imaginative game worlds while understanding the practical requirements of game development.
Key Responsibilities
1. Character & Creature Design
- Design original, child-friendly characters, creatures, and companions.
- Develop expressive faces, appealing proportions, and clear silhouettes.
- Create character sheets, poses, expressions, and animation-ready artwork.
- Maintain a consistent character art style throughout the game.
2. 2D Game Environments
- Create beautiful side-scrolling environments across 20+ themed stages, including Jungle, Arctic, Ancient Egypt, and Fantasy worlds.
- Design environments with properly separated foreground, midground, and background layers for parallax scrolling.
- Develop reusable environmental assets such as trees, rocks, plants, buildings, pathways, and props.
- Use natural lighting, balanced colors, and subtle painterly details.
- Maintain clean, uncluttered gameplay areas with sufficient space for characters, text, and interactive elements.
3. Game UI & Interactive Elements
- Design complete game interfaces, including menus, HUDs, buttons, panels, and selection screens.
- Create custom on-screen keyboard interfaces suitable for educational typing games.
- Prepare individual keyboard keys, button states, and interactive UI assets for direct use in the game engine.
- Ensure excellent readability, proper spacing, and visual clarity for young players.
- Design UI that blends naturally with the game's artistic style.
4. Production-Ready Game Assets
- Deliver properly separated, transparent PNG assets.
- Prepare sprite sheets, texture atlases, and reusable game elements when required.
- Provide organized, editable source files (PSD, AFDESIGN, or equivalent).
- Maintain clearly named layers and logical file structures.
- Optimize artwork for smooth performance in browser-based games.
- Collaborate with our developer to ensure assets are ready for implementation.
5. Visual Consistency
- Establish a consistent visual style covering characters, environments, and UI.
- Develop a simple art style guide covering colors, lighting, proportions, outlines, and shading.
- Maintain the same artistic quality across all game stages.
- Ensure the complete game feels like one cohesive visual world.
Our Preferred Art Style
We are looking for a premium, stylized 2D game art style with:
- Clean cel-shading and subtle hand-painted textures.
- Soft, matte surfaces rather than glossy or plastic-looking finishes.
- Natural lighting and balanced, harmonious colors.
- Rounded, expressive, child-friendly character designs.
- Clear silhouettes and visually readable shapes.
- Gentle environmental depth and charming storybook atmosphere.
- Clean compositions with sufficient breathing space for gameplay.
We want artwork that looks professionally illustrated, polished, calm, and engaging—not visually overcrowded.
We want to avoid excessive gradients, strong bloom effects, oversaturated colors, generic clipart, and unnecessarily detailed backgrounds.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Robust professional experience creating 2D game artwork.
- A portfolio demonstrating game characters, environments, and game UI.
- Excellent understanding of composition, color theory, lighting, perspective, and visual storytelling.
- Ability to create layered side-scrolling environments with parallax-ready assets.
- Experience designing functional game UI, not just static interface mockups.
- Strong proficiency in Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Designer, Krita, or similar professional art software.
- Ability to organize editable source files and export clean, developer-ready assets.
- Comfortable working from initial sketches through final polished artwork.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain visual consistency over a long-term project.
- Good communication skills and ability to incorporate feedback.
Bonus Skills
- Experience creating assets for HTML5 games using Construct 3, Phaser, or similar engines.
- Familiarity with Spine or other 2D skeletal animation workflows.
- Experience with tilemaps, modular environments, or sprite sheet optimization.
- Previous experience creating educational or children's games.
Game programming and animation expertise are not mandatory.
What We Offer

- 100% Remote Work: Work remotely with flexible communication.
- Creative Ownership:
Help define the artistic identity of an entire game world.
- Meaningful Projects: Create educational games that help children develop important skills.
- Small, Focused Team: Collaborate directly with the developer and project owner.
- Quality-First Approach: We prioritize thoughtful artwork and consistent quality over rushed production.
- Paid Test Assignment: Shortlisted candidates will be compensated for their evaluation task.
How to Apply — Mandatory To help us identify artists with the right experience, please include the following in your application.
1. Portfolio Link
Share your ArtStation, Behance, or personal portfolio link.
Your portfolio must demonstrate experience in:
- 2D game character design
- 2D game environment design

Please highlight work you personally created.
Important: Portfolios containing only logos, branding, social media graphics, marketing designs, or standalone non-game illustrations will not be considered.
2. Short Answer (2–3 Sentences)
Please answer the following question in your application:
"How would you maintain a consistent visual style across 20+ layered game environments while ensuring that characters, backgrounds, and interactive UI elements all feel like part of the same game world?"
Applications without a portfolio link or an answer to this question may not be shortlisted.
Our Selection Process
Stage 1 — Portfolio Review
We review your previous game artwork, artistic quality, style consistency, and technical experience.
Stage 2 — Paid Art Test
Shortlisted candidates will complete a small paid test based on a Jungle or Arctic game environment.
The test may include
- A small environment section with clearly separated parallax layers.
- A simple character or creature concept.
- A few functional game UI elements.
We will evaluate visual quality, composition, style consistency, layer organization, and production readiness.
The exact scope, timeline, payment, and deliverables will be agreed upon before the test begins.
Stage 3 — Final Discussion & Offer
Selected candidates will discuss project workflow, responsibilities, compensation, and contract terms.
Who Should Apply?
This role is ideal for a versatile 2D game artist who enjoys working across characters, environments, and UI, and wants to contribute to a complete game rather than isolated illustrations.
We are looking for someone who understands that great game art must be both beautiful and functional.
If you love creating charming game worlds and can turn your designs into clean, developer-ready assets, we would love to see your portfolio.
Pay: ₹40,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
