Senior Execution Engineer - Sports Betting

About the role

We are hiring a hands-on execution engineer to own the software that turns trading signals into reliable live orders across sportsbooks, exchanges and prediction markets. You will work with our quantitative researchers and engineers, taking responsibility for integrations, order handling, risk controls and production operations.

This is a senior individual contributor role. We need someone who has personally built and operated live systems and can explain how they behave when an API, market or process fails.

Why this role matters

Mettle Labs is a small, highly-skilled and very ambitious team, building state of the art models in the professional sports betting space. Our models need dependable execution to be useful in production. This role owns the path from a valid signal to a reconciled order and settled position, including ongoing maintenance as venues and requirements change.

What you will own

- Build and maintain authorised venue integrations using APIs and streaming feeds, with consistent market mapping and order interfaces.
- Compare executable prices after costs, available liquidity and quote freshness; enforce the trading rules agreed with the research team.
- Handle order submission, cancellation, rejection, partial fills and uncertain responses without creating uncontrolled duplicate exposure.
- Maintain durable order and position records, reconcile venue state after restarts, and track settlement and balances.
- Implement stake and exposure limits, stale-signal checks,



kill switches and a controlled path from simulation to live trading.
- Own deployment, automated tests, monitoring and incident recovery. Protect credentials and document the system so others can support it.
- Measure fill quality, slippage, latency and missed orders, helping researchers distinguish execution problems from model performance.
- Build and maintain authorised web-data integrations where APIs are unavailable; experience with browser automation, dynamic websites and anti-bot protections is highly valuable, with a strong focus on reliability, access permissions and compliance.

Required experience

- Personal ownership of a live trading or similarly critical transaction system, including its production operation and failure recovery.
- Strong Python and practical asynchronous programming. Ability to design maintainable services rather than rely on research notebooks.
- Experience with REST APIs, WebSockets, authentication, rate limits, reconnections and changing third-party interfaces.
- Experience with browser automation, dynamic websites and anti-bot protections is highly valuable, with a strong focus on reliability, access permissions and compliance.
- Understanding of order books, fees, liquidity, partial fills, exposure and settlement.




- Experience with durable state, SQL databases, event records and reconciliation across distributed systems.
- Linux, Git, containers, automated testing, logging and monitoring; confidence diagnosing production incidents.
- Clear communication, sound judgement around real-money risk, and the ability to deliver independently while keeping the team informed.

Solid pluses

- Sportsbook, exchange or prediction-market execution experience. Relevant experience from other trading markets is welcome.
- Experience operating model inference services and tracing a signal through to an executed order.
- C++ or Rust, performance profiling, or low-latency systems experience where it solves a measured problem.

Personal qualities

You take ownership of reliability after launch, investigate failures carefully and make practical trade-offs. You can work closely with researchers without needing to own the research strategy yourself.

Working arrangements

This role will be fully-remote, initially part-time at 3 days per week, with the potential to become full-time for the right individual. Ongoing ownership with regular UK working-hour overlap. Live-event coverage and incident-response expectations will be agreed explicitly.

Interview process
