Network Security Engineer – Illumio Micro-Segmentation Specialist

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Network Security Engineer with strong expertise in Illumio Zero Trust Segmentation and micro-segmentation to design, implement, and manage enterprise-grade network security solutions.

The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on experience with Illumio Core, including Policy Compute Engine (PCE), Virtual Enforcement Nodes (VENs), application dependency mapping, segmentation policy design, and enforcement. The role involves strengthening security postures across on-premises and cloud environments, minimizing lateral movement risks, and ensuring compliance with enterprise security standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Illumio Micro-Segmentation – Design & Implementation

- Design, deploy, and configure Illumio Core components, including Policy Compute Engine (PCE) and Virtual Enforcement Nodes (VENs).
- Implement and enforce micro-segmentation policies aligned with Zero Trust security principles.
- Develop application segmentation strategies to protect critical applications, workloads, and infrastructure.
- Conduct Application Dependency Mapping (ADM) to identify application communication patterns, dependencies, and traffic flows.
- Define segmentation boundaries and develop reference architectures, implementation plans, and deployment playbooks.
- Configure and manage segmentation policies across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.

2. Network Security Operations & Optimization

- Monitor and maintain Illumio deployments to ensure optimal performance, policy enforcement, and compliance.
- Analyze network traffic patterns and application dependencies to identify security gaps and recommend corrective actions.
- Troubleshoot segmentation-related issues, policy conflicts, and connectivity disruptions.




- Continuously optimize segmentation policies to minimize operational complexity while maintaining security.
- Support workload discovery, policy simulation, testing, enforcement, and ongoing policy lifecycle management.

3. Zero Trust Security & Network Engineering

- Apply Zero Trust Network Security principles to enterprise infrastructure and application environments.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, firewalls, and network security architecture.
- Identify and mitigate lateral movement risks through workload-level segmentation.
- Support network security architecture reviews and contribute to enterprise security improvement initiatives.
- Ensure secure communication between workloads across data centres, cloud platforms, and hybrid environments.

4. Security Integration & Incident Response

- Integrate Illumio with SIEM/SOAR platforms and other enterprise security tools for monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
- Collaborate with security operations teams to investigate network security incidents and segmentation violations.
- Support security monitoring, threat containment, and incident remediation activities.
- Work with infrastructure, application, and cloud teams to resolve security and connectivity issues.

5. Governance, Documentation & Compliance

- Maintain technical documentation, configuration standards, operational procedures, and implementation runbooks.
- Support security audits and compliance assessments by providing evidence of segmentation controls.
- Ensure micro-segmentation policies align with organizational security requirements and regulatory standards.




- Participate in security reviews and contribute to continuous improvement of security processes.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Experience

- 8+ years of experience in network security engineering, network infrastructure security, or enterprise cybersecurity.
- Strong hands-on experience implementing and managing Illumio Core micro-segmentation solutions.
- Proven experience with application dependency mapping, segmentation policy design, and policy enforcement.
- Experience securing enterprise workloads across on-premises, cloud, or hybrid environments.

Technical Skills

- Strong expertise in Illumio Core architecture and components, particularly:
- Policy Compute Engine (PCE)
- Virtual Enforcement Nodes (VENs)
- Application Dependency Mapping (ADM)
- Segmentation policy creation, testing, and enforcement
- Workload discovery and application segmentation
- Strong understanding of Zero Trust architecture and micro-segmentation principles.
- Proficiency in TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, firewalls, and network traffic analysis.
- Experience with hybrid infrastructure and cloud security environments.
- Familiarity with SIEM/SOAR platforms and enterprise security integrations.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills related to network security and workload communication.

Preferred Certifications

- Illumio ASP Certification.
- CISSP.
- CCNP Security or CCIE Security.
- Other relevant network security or cybersecurity certifications.
