About the role:
You will develop and maintain a desktop application (Tauri with a TypeScript front end and a Rust backend) that helps teams remediate PDFs for accessibility. It covers structure-tree editing, content-pane editing, auto-tagging, and standards validation. You will build features, fix defects found by remediators, and keep the app fast and reliable on macOS and Windows.
Responsibilities:
- PDF structure and content work: implement and extend tag-tree operations (retag, insert, wrap, move, merge, delete, attributes) and content-pane editing. Keep the structure tree valid after every edit, including object references, marked-content IDs, and artifacts.
- Auto-tagging: improve detection of headings, lists, tables, links, captions, and reading order. Integrate and evaluate automated tagging engines, including remote ones.
- Accessibility checker: implement and maintain PDF/UA and WCAG rules. Close gaps against independent third-party validators.
- Front end (TypeScript): build accessible, keyboard-first UI: tag panel, canvas selection, shortcuts, settings, and native menus. Make sure the app itself works with screen readers.
- Backend (Rust): own the Tauri commands, PDF parsing and writing, and performance on large documents.
- Services: maintain the standalone auto-tagging API service and the over-the-air update pipeline (signed updates,
automated releases from version tags).
- Quality: write unit, corpus-invariant, and harness tests. Root-cause reported bugs (often from screen recordings) instead of patching symptoms.
- Cross-platform: fix OS-specific issues such as Windows keyboard shortcuts and file handling.
Requirements:
- 4+ years of skilled software development.
- Solid Rust and TypeScript.
- Experience building desktop apps with Tauri (or a comparable framework such as Electron).
- Working knowledge of PDF internals: object model, content streams, text and graphics state, fonts, tagged PDF structure.
- Experience shipping cross-platform desktop apps with installers, code signing, and auto-update.
- Comfort with version control, CI pipelines, and automated testing.
- Clear written communication; you can turn vague user feedback into a reproducible root cause.
Nice to have:
- Experience with open-source PDF libraries or commercial PDF remediation tools.
- Familiarity with PDF/UA, WCAG 2.2, Section 508, and EN 301 549.
- Experience with layout or document-AI models (OCR, table detection) and measuring their quality.
- Containerization and cloud object-storage experience.
- Assistive-technology experience, or IAAP certifications (CPACC, WAS).
