We are hiring a Python Automation Engineer to take ownership of an existing, working pipeline, stabilising and hardening it and extending it.

Key responsibilities

These are drawn directly from the work performed over the last six months, grouped by area. Roughly 70% of the role is running and improving the existing pipeline; 30% is new development from the roadmap.

1. Pipeline operation and ownership
2. Word document parsing and standardisation

3. Validation and quality checking
4. Conversion: Pandoc, Lua and Moodle XML

5. Equations and media
6. Debugging and root-cause analysis

7. Engineering hygiene and documentation

8. Roadmap development (as prioritised)

Qualifications

- Bachelors degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or equivalent practical experience.
- 0.5 – 5 years of professional Python development, including at least one document-conversion, ETL or data-transformation project.
- A portfolio, GitHub link or work sample showing document or data processing is strongly preferred.




- Comfortable working on Windows (current environment); Linux familiarity is a plus.

Preferred skills and behavioural competencies These separate a strong candidate from an adequate one and support the roadmap.

Preferred technical skills

- XML and data validation libraries: lxml, xmlschema, pydantic, jsonschema.
- Testing: pytest, Hypothesis, coverage.py; CI with GitHub Actions or similar.
- Maths content: LaTeX, MathML, OMML (Word equations), MathJax rendering in Moodle; sympy or latex2mathml exposure.
- Other DOCX tooling: mammoth, docx2python; image tools such as Pillow and python-magic.
- Web and deployment: FastAPI or Flask, basic React/HTML/JS, Docker, SQL (PostgreSQL/MySQL).
- Moodle Web Services / REST APIs and LMS administration.
- Prior work in EdTech, assessment platforms or publishing workflows.

Behavioural competencies

- Attention to detail: treats a wrong answer key or a missing image as a defect, and checks the imported result rather than assuming a generated file is correct.
- Ownership: takes over an inherited codebase without needing it rewritten first; leaves it better documented than found.
- Structured problem-solving: isolates which stage of a pipeline caused a failure before changing code.
- Transparent communication with non-technical users: explains source-document problems to content staff in plain terms.
- Pragmatism: introduces databases, queues or web interfaces only when volume or users justify them.
- Documentation discipline: keeps run-books, defect logs and change notes current as part of the job, not after it.
