Role & responsibilities
Design and specify the mechanical equipment and balance-of-plant systems of D&ES; power-plant projects, including the piping that connects them, and own packages from datasheet to vendor-document approval. The Engineer works under the Mechanical lead and is developed to run packages independently and then to lead the discipline.
Equipment engineering
Prepare calculations, datasheets and specifications for static equipment (pressure vessels, storage tanks, heat exchangers) and rotating equipment (pumps, fans, compressors and packaged units), with the calculation basis shown for the checker.
- Balance-of-plant systems: Develop the mechanical design of plant systems from the Process P&IDs; and duty conditions: fuel gas and liquid fuel, water treatment, cooling water and cooling towers, compressed air, fire protection and HVAC.
- Piping at the equipment: Size lines and check hydraulics for pumped and utility services; agree piping class and materials with the Piping lead; give nozzle loads and review the piping layout, supports and stress results at equipment connections.
- Procurement support: Prepare requisitions and technical bid evaluations, and review vendor documents against the datasheet through to final approval.
- Drawings: Prepare equipment arrangement drawings with the draftsman and check them before issue.
- Package ownership: Take each equipment package or system from datasheet to vendor-document approval, with the lead reviewing at each stage.
- Interfaces: Resolve interface data with Process, Piping, Electrical and Civil/Structural, and take part in HAZOP and 3D model reviews.
- Checking: Check the calculations and drawings of junior engineers and draftsmen before the design review, and return errors as numbered comments.
- Clients and vendors:
Answer client and vendor comments and technical queries until each is closed.
- Estimating: Give man-hour inputs for proposals and change orders.
- Safety in design: Apply the hazardous-area and fire-protection codes of the project's jurisdiction to mechanical designs, and follow BGR's HSE standards.
Preferred candidate profile
- Education: B.E./B.Tech or B.Sc./B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering; a Master's degree is an advantage.
- Experience: 7 - 9 years of mechanical engineering with an EPC contractor or engineering consultancy, including at least four years on power-plant balance of plant (gas-turbine, combined-cycle or conventional) across FEED and detailed engineering.
- Equipment: Hands-on preparation of datasheets, specifications, requisitions and technical bid evaluations, and vendor document review, for static or rotating equipment.
- Piping knowledge: Line sizing and hydraulics, piping class selection, nozzle loads and support review at equipment connections.
- Required codes: ASME BPVC Section VIII; API 610; API 650; NFPA 850 and NFPA 20; ASME B31.1 and B31.3 at piping interfaces.
• Preferred codes: TEMA and API 660/661; API 617/618; CTI cooling-tower standards; ASHRAE; NACE MR0175; API 682; client standards such as Saudi Aramco SAES/SAMSS and ADNOC specifications.
- Sectors: Power plants required; oil & gas, refining, water & desalination or data-centre cooling is an advantage.
- Tools: PV Elite and AutoCAD; working knowledge of HTRI; SolidWorks, ETank and 3D model review (AVEVA E3D, Navisworks) are advantages.
- Language: Fluent written and spoken English; Arabic is an advantage.
Mechanical and piping engineering roles at power-plant EPC contractors and engineering consultancies such as TCE, L&T;, Fichtner, Worley, Toyo Engineering or Tecnimont, or the engineering departments of power-equipment and boiler companies such as BHEL and Thermax, or equivalent international firms.
