Cardiac Tissue Engineering & 3D Bioprinting Researcher

Location: New Delhi, India

Type: Full time

About NITS EngineeringNITS Engineeringis a biomedical technology company building the next generation of biomedical devices, in vitro disease models, and engineering systems for drug discovery, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics. We combine precision hardware engineering with biomedical research to build the tools that take science from the lab bench to real world application.

About the RoleWe are looking for an experienced Cardiac Tissue Engineering & 3D Bioprinting Researcher to lead the development of engineered cardiac tissue constructs using biomaterials, tissue engineering, and advanced 3D biofabrication.

You will be responsible for translating iPSC-derived cardiac cells into structured, functional 3D cardiac tissue constructs. The role spans biomaterial and bioink development, cell–material interactions, 3D bioprinting, tissue organization, maturation, and long-term construct performance.

The successful candidate will take tissue constructs from biological and engineering concepts through material selection, bioink development, fabrication, optimization, characterization, and functional validation. This work will be carried out in collaboration with CenFab at VIT, Vellore.

What You Will DoBiomaterials and Bioinks

- Develop and optimize hydrogel and biomaterial systems for cardiac tissue engineering.
- Formulate and characterize cell compatible bioinks, including rheology, gelation, crosslinking, printability, and mechanical properties.
- Investigate cell and material interactions and their influence on cardiac phenotype.

Bioprinting and Tissue Fabrication

- Develop extrusion based and other bioprinting strategies, optimizing pressure, nozzle geometry, speed, deposition pattern, and cell density.
- Maintain high cell viability during and after printing.
- Design tissue architectures that promote cardiomyocyte alignment, organization, and maturation.

Transport, Hypoxia, and Disease Modeling

- Address oxygen and nutrient transport in 3D constructs through architecture design, perfusion, or vascularization strategies.
- Develop hypoxia and oxygen controlled culture approaches to model ischemic injury and myocardial infarction.

Functional Validation

- Characterize tissue architecture, alignment, viability, and matrix organization using confocal imaging and quantitative image analysis.
- Measure contractile force, beating behavior, calcium handling, and electrophysiological function.
- Validate drug response using reference compounds with known cardiac effects.
- Define maturation and functionality criteria with the molecular and functional characterization team.

Reproducibility and Collaboration

- Develop reproducible fabrication SOPs, with batch to batch consistency suitable for multiwell and higher throughput screening formats.
- Work with the iPSC researcher to define cell requirements, differentiation stage, and cell density for fabrication.
- Maintain records of material batches, formulations, print parameters, and outcomes.
- Contribute to publications, grant proposals, intellectual property, and reports, and mentor junior researchers.

What We Are Looking For

- PhD in tissue engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, or a related discipline, with 3 to 5 years of postdoctoral or industry experience.
- Research experience outside India (for example the US, UK, Europe, Singapore, South Korea, China, Japan, Current Zealand or Australia).
- Hands-on experience engineering cardiac or skeletal muscle tissue constructs.
- Hands-on experience with extrusion based or other 3D bioprinting of living tissues.
- Strong expertise in hydrogel design, bioink formulation,

rheology, and crosslinking.
- Experience culturing iPSC derived or primary cells in 3D for at least several weeks.
- Experience quantifying tissue function, such as contractility, calcium imaging, or electrophysiology.
- Ability to independently design, troubleshoot, and optimize experiments.
- Peer reviewed publication record and strong scientific writing.

Nice to Have

- Direct experience with iPSC derived cardiomyocytes, engineered heart tissue, or cardiac organoids.
- Hypoxia models, oxygen gradient systems, or ischemic injury models.
- Vascularization or perfusion of engineered tissues.
- Multimaterial or multinozzle bioprinting, or bioprinter development and automation.
- Mechanical characterization of soft tissues and hydrogels.
- Experience with multiwell or high throughput tissue formats.

Why Join

- Lead the development of engineered human cardiac tissue constructs
- Work at the intersection of stem-cell biology, regenerative medicine, biomaterials, and 3D bioprinting.
- Own the tissue-engineering process from material selection and bioink development through fabrication and functional validation.
- Work with human iPSC-derived cardiac cells and advanced biofabrication systems.
- Investigate challenging problems including tissue maturation, cellular organization, oxygen transport, hypoxia, and long-term tissue viability.
- Access to in-house 3D bioprinting, rapid prototyping, and biomedical engineering infrastructure.
- Work closely with researchers in stem-cell biology, molecular characterization, engineering, and regulatory science.
- Opportunity to develop physiologically relevant human cardiac tissue models for disease modelling, drug discovery, toxicity assessment, and regenerative medicine.

If you are interested in building functional tissues rather than simply printing structures, this role offers the opportunity to solve the biological and engineering problems required to turn living cells into reproducible human tissue models.
