Instrument Maintenance Engineer / Calibration Engineer
Specialization: Component-Level PCB Repair, Troubleshooting.
Role Title: Instrument Maintenance Engineer / Calibration Engineer
Department: Technical Service & Calibration
Experience: 5 Years+
Education: B.E. / B.Tech in E&C; / Diploma
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Instrument Maintenance Engineer / Calibration Engineer to join our technical service team. This role moves beyond standard modular replacement (swapping out entire assemblies) to precise, component-level micro-repair, circuit troubleshooting, and high-precision instrument calibration. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on expertise in signal tracing, fine-pitch SMD/BGA soldering, and post-repair system alignment to ensure test and measurement instruments operate strictly within original manufacturer specifications and NIST-traceable standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Diagnostic & Component Isolation
· Circuit Analysis: Interpret schematic diagrams, PCB layout traces, and theory-of-operation manuals to systematically trace signal paths.
· Signal Tracing & Injection: Utilize oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and function generators to trace and inject high-frequency or analog signals across amplifiers, filters, ADCs, and precision voltage references.
· Parametric Testing: Perform in-circuit parametric testing of passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors) and active devices (ICs, op-amps, transistors, diodes) using LCR meters and curve tracers.
· Thermal Inspection: Employ thermal imaging cameras to identify shorted components, overheating power regulators, and abnormal current draws.
2. Component-Level Soldering & Rework
· SMD & Through-Hole Rework: Safely remove and replace fine-pitch Surface Mount Devices (SMDs), Ball Grid Arrays (BGAs), Quad Flat Packages (QFPs),
and discrete components without thermal or structural damage to surrounding traces.
· PCB Trace & Pad Repair: Rebuild lifted copper pads, broken traces, and damage caused by physical impact, overvoltage, or liquid exposure using jumper wire techniques and conductive epoxies.
· Thermal Profiling: Utilize hot-air rework stations, preheaters, and temperature-controlled irons to prevent thermal shock to sensitive precision components (e.g., Ultra-stable Voltage References).
· Conformal Coating Service: Carefully strip protective coatings (silicone, acrylic, polyurethane) for micro-repair and reapply post-repair to maintain insulation resistance and environmental seal.
3. Post-Repair Calibration & Alignment
· Precision Hardware Alignment: Re-adjust potentiometer settings, DAC calibration offsets, and trimmer capacitors to accurately restore hardware specifications.
· Burn-In & Stability Testing: Execute thermal cycle testing and operational burn-in to verify that replaced components remain stable over time and across temperature variations.
· System Recalibration: Perform full system-level calibration against NIST-traceable standards to confirm repaired PCBs operate within original manufacturer tolerances (e.g., sub-PPM voltage accuracy).
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
· Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) (Preferred) or Diploma or a related technical field.
· Experience: 5 years+ of proven hands-on experience in component-level PCB troubleshooting,
micro-soldering repair, and high-precision instrument calibration.
· ESD Safety: Rigorous adherence to ESD Control (ANSI/ESD S20.20) guidelines, working in static-safe environments using grounded wrist straps, mats, and ionized air blowers.
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS & STANDARDS (ADDED ADVANTAGE)
· IPC-A-610: Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies (evaluates solder joint quality, alignment, and cleanliness).
· IPC-7711 / 7721: Rework, Modification, and Repair of Electronic Assemblies (industry standard for trace repair, component desoldering, and board restoration).
· J-STD-001: Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies (defines materials, methods, and process verification).
· ASP Training Certification: Additional specialized OEM or technical training certifications.
- Note – ASP Certification or relevant Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) service training is highly desirable. as working with sensors, instrumentation, control circuits, and electrical safety practices.
- Candidates should possess capabilities in Mechanical Engineering, including understanding of mechanical systems, rotating equipment, and fundamentals of fluid and thermal behavior.
- Relevant qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, or related field) and experience in calibration or test engineering in industrial, automotive, or energy sectors.
- Additional beneficial skills include familiarity with industry standards (ISO, IEC, or equivalent), proficiency with data acquisition and analysis tools, attention to detail, and robust documentation and communication abilities.
- Ability to work safely in on-site environments, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and manage multiple calibration tasks and deadlines is expected.
