Process Simulation Engineer – Modelica / OpenModelicaCompany: EarthEn Energy
Location: Bengaluru, Karnataka
Job Type: Full-time, On-site
Experience: 3–6 years
Mandatory RequirementHands-on experience with both Modelica-based modelling and OpenModelica is compulsory. Candidates must have independently developed, implemented, and simulated engineering models using OpenModelica. Candidates with only theoretical knowledge, training, or experience limited to Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, MATLAB/Simulink, or other simulation tools will not be considered without practical OpenModelica experience.
About EarthEn EnergyEarthEn Energy is a climate-tech company developing advanced thermal energy storage systems to decarbonize industrial heat. Our heat battery stores energy using waste heat or renewable electricity and delivers reliable, on-demand heat for industrial applications.
Job SummaryWe are seeking a Process Simulation Engineer with practical experience in Modelica-based equation modelling and OpenModelica simulations to develop and validate dynamic models of thermal energy storage systems and associated thermal-fluid processes.
The candidate should be comfortable translating physical principles into mathematical equations, implementing dynamic models, running simulations, and analysing system behaviour over time.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and simulate dynamic models using OpenModelica and the Modelica language.
- Build physics-based models of thermal energy storage systems, packed beds, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, pipes, and related process equipment.
- Develop mass and energy balances, heat-transfer equations, and thermodynamic models for gas and liquid systems.
- Simulate transient behaviour, including charging, discharging, temperature profiles, pressure drops, and heat losses.
- Convert engineering concepts,
process flow diagrams, and P&IDs; into mathematical simulation models.
- Validate models using engineering calculations, experimental data, or published reference data.
- Troubleshoot model convergence, initialization, numerical stability, and simulation accuracy.
- Conduct sensitivity studies and parameter analysis to evaluate system performance.
- Use Python or MATLAB for data analysis, post-processing, and engineering calculations.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in process simulation, thermal-system modelling, or engineering simulation.
- Demonstrable hands-on experience with the Modelica language and OpenModelica is mandatory.
- Strong understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and mass and energy balances.
- Experience developing, debugging, running, and interpreting dynamic simulation models.
- Ability to explain the governing equations, modelling assumptions, and validation approach for models developed independently.
- Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for engineering calculations and simulation data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with thermal energy storage, packed-bed systems, heat exchangers, or industrial energy systems.
- Knowledge of real-gas thermodynamics and equations of state, such as Peng–Robinson or Soave–Redlich–Kwong.
- Experience with transient simulations, sensitivity analysis, and model validation.
- Familiarity with FMI/FMU, co-simulation, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, or gPROMS.
Who Should Apply?Apply only if you have personally built and simulated engineering models using OpenModelica and the Modelica language. Your application should describe a project or skilled assignment that demonstrates your practical modelling experience.
