About the role

Vancouver Automation is hiring a Mechanical Engineer to design the hardware behind our robotic sanding systems. We build the Mark Series of automated sanding robots in Richmond, BC, and install them at manufacturing sites across North America and beyond.

You will take machines from concept to shop floor: model them in SolidWorks, build frames from weldments and sheet metal, print fixtures and prototypes, and lay out the pneumatics that make it all move. We are a small team, so your designs go into real machines quickly and you will see them run.

What you'll do

- Design robot cells, frames, guarding, enclosures, and end-of-arm tooling in SolidWorks.
- Build welded structures using SolidWorks Weldments and prepare cut lists and fabrication drawings.
- Design sheet metal parts with correct bend allowances, flat patterns, and manufacturable details.
- Produce clean 2D drawings with GD&T;, BOMs, and revision control for vendors and our shop.
- Select and size pneumatic components: air cylinders, valves, regulators, fittings, and vacuum.
- Draw pneumatic schematics and work out force, stroke, speed, and air consumption.
- Design and 3D print fixtures, jigs, brackets, and prototype parts, and pick the right material for each.
- Simulate robot reach, cycle time, and collisions before parts are made.
- Work with machine shops, fabricators, and suppliers on quotes, parts, and fixes.
- Help assemble, test, and commission machines in our shop and at customer sites.
- Improve existing Mark Series designs for cost, reliability, and ease of assembly.

What you need

- A degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- 3+ years designing machinery or industrial equipment.
- Strong SolidWorks skills: parts,

large assemblies, configurations, and detailed drawings.
- Hands-on experience with SolidWorks Weldments and Sheet Metal tools.
- Practical 3D printing experience (FDM at minimum) and a positive sense of when a printed part will hold up.
- Solid understanding of pneumatics, especially sizing and selecting air cylinders for a given load and speed.
- Working knowledge of fabrication methods: laser cutting, bending, welding, and machining.
- A portfolio or examples of machines or parts you have designed.
- Comfort working hands-on in a shop and travelling to customer sites when needed.

Preferred

- Experience with FANUC ROBOGUIDE, RoboDK, or similar robot simulation software.
- Ability to import CAD into a simulation, check reach and collisions, and estimate cycle times.
- Experience laying out robot cells, including safety guarding and operator access.

Nice to have

These are a bonus, not a requirement.

- Familiarity with industrial PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar) and basic I/O wiring.
- Arduino or other microcontroller projects for test rigs and prototypes.
- Experience programming or operating industrial robots (FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Universal Robots).
- Knowledge of machine safety standards such as CSA Z432, ISO 10218, or CE requirements.

What we offer

- Real ownership of designs that go straight into production machines.
- Exposure to robotics, vision, and automation across the full product.
- A small team where you work directly with the owners.
- Flexible hybrid schedule.

How to apply

Send your resume and a few examples of your SolidWorks work (screenshots, drawings, or a portfolio link) to [email protected]. Tell us about one machine or fixture you designed and what you would change about it now.
